What are using on the surface rust?
Barkeepers friend on a maroon scotchbrite. If you have semi decent paint, use a sponge instead of scotchbrite.

Great thread! Way over my skill and patience set. I grew up going to my Grandfather's farm during summers in LaSalle Illinois. My favorite tractor I was aloud to use on my own was the lawn mower, Lol.

Thank you, @Sgt Gus it does look sort of daunting, or spooky that it needs to be split to service certain things, but really it isn’t too bad as they are meant to come apart like this.

I travel through La Salle/Peru at least once a year when I go to Crystal Lake. I stop for fuel in Tonica and go to Starved Rock for a while and enjoy the Illinois River.

Little bit of progress. Still waiting on some parts to arrive.

Manifold was blasted and hit with high heat black, then some blue on the flange and intake portion.

New cam and crank gears installed. Need seals for the governor shaft to install the timing cover and then the oil pan after that. The timing cover makes the front of the pan rail, so it needs to go on first.

Big stuff on the 8n, I installed the new throttle quadrant. Need to clean the throttle lever up and get it buttoned up.

Sick build. Can these sort of tractors run 3 point pto attachments?
Yes they can. You can run a brush hog and box scraper etc. Can't run a cultivator unless you have a sherman in there. The 2000 might be able to run a cultivator??

From what I understand, the n series gearing doesn't work for a cultivator attachment because of its gearing. However you can once you install a Sherman. Its like another transmission with another set of gears. I've seen one or 2 in person

Ah, I follow now.

My 860 has the 5 speed also, it really could use some lower gearing to be ideal. But the engine makes enough grunt to overcome it. I'm guessing the 2000 may struggle a little bit in that department.

Good question. I meant condition but how bad a job is it anyways
So the old cam was in fine shape as far as the lobes and such, lifters were fine. The big issue is it became a two piece camshaft.

As far as removing the cam, nothing crazy, but of course it does require the engine to be removed to gain access to the cover and hydraulic pump gear on the back of the cam, oil pan must be removed and engine upside down to have the lifters fall away from the cam as the journal is much smaller than the face of the lifter.

Cam gear is pressed on and needs to be installed with a press.

So more involved than a small block Chevy, but nothing super crazy all things considered.
