everything is overpriced here too. You also don't see hardly ANy big blocks for sale. You just have to look around for awhile and not jump on the first one you see.

Well the externals are worth the 175 bucks at least. Meaning starter, alternator, power steering pump, pulleys, brackets, etc.

Yes, you will pay for a 454 Dave. Another reasin I suggested a 350 w Vortec heads. Much cheaper and adequate performance. As bad as I wanted to run my 68 Olds 455, I think I am going to sell it. I'm thinking I want to go electronics. Either a Vortec or 5.3 LS and a 4L65-E.

if and a big IF you can find someone to buy used parts for the right price. starters are like $50 for reman and you'd have to be under that to sell it so I don't see much if any profit made, but if you are set on it buy it and pay what he wants for it.

OK, 454 starter $50 durlast, alternator $50, power steering pump $40, and water pump $40 all from autozone. Thats including the cost to buy any brackets.

I'm take a gamble on this 454 for $175 and it wont be first or last time I gambled and lost.

454's are hard to come around here.

hard to come by doesn't always require overpaying especially for a 454 that is way behind today's technology :deal: As stated, you'd be much better off spending your money on building up a 350 as your dollar will stretch much farther and most likely out perform the 454 with the same money spent....

...and moving to a different town would not solve your issues...

I cant make up my mind on what to do. I narrowed my choices down to 2.

1- buy the 454 for 175 bucks and gamble on it.

2- bring the 88 c1500 back to the house and strip it down then call a junk dealer to come get it and have a extra 350 plus the one in the 90 now. Plus keep all hard body parts, bumpers, and anything else I could use the 90 3/4 ton thats worth saving.

Or try to do both.

yea if the new duralast starters are $50, you'd be lucky to get $25 for one. Now if you owned a junkyard, you'd have better luck, cuz guys going to the yard for electrical parts, with no garuntees of working, moisture, etc. they'd want it cheaper then retail.

The junkyards are high around here. 75 for gmt400 fender and yard next to it wants 100 for fender.

too high when you can get one with warranty for $50 at parts store.

$75-100 for a good gm fender is worth it, wait til 20 years from now when they go for $500 or so.

:word:

I wouldn't pay more than $15 for a used starter without a warranty and x2 on the fender prices. Those prices sound good to me for good, OEM fenders

The starter, alternator and power steering pump are all the same as a 350. The stuff you need from the 454 is the brackets and pulleys.

When it comes to a work truck, dollar for dollar, a 454 will always out-perform a 350... and sometimes even without a MPG penalty:)

In theory you're right bucket, but that's not the case with my BBC. Maybe it the 3.21 hurting me though and I beleive it is. Most of my driving is city driving and those tall gears, tall tires with a Th400 and a tall 2.42 first gear, just doesn't give alot of grunt to get 2 tons of truck moving unless I get on it. I'd rather have some 3.73's and think it would do alot better. I've even considered building a 700r4 and swap in the 4.56 CUCV rear end. I bet that would improve my mpg drastically. But then how long is the 700r4 gonna hold up? But why do I care? Just build another one. Wish I had more time.
