If that saying is so true, why are 4.6, 4.8 5.3, 6.0, 3.8 etc motors spanking the hell outta 6.6, 7.4, and 7.5 motors? And getting at least 1 and a half times the fuel economy and lasting longer? The old adage of no replacement for displacment is out the window. There comes a time when technology is a replacement for displacment. Keep in mind, the bigger the motor, the more the friction, the more weight mass to rotate etc, and yes it does make a huge difference. I'd take a well tuned 323 5.3 small block over a naturally aspirated old school 454 7.4 any day of the week.
You must have lotso money if you're not concerned about gas prices.

I know how to get money for projects like this 454.

Well if the block is cracked. The externals are worth $175 bucks in not more. I know the carb runs up to 200-300 bucks used/new.

sorry man but anybody dumb enough to buy a USED carb UNKNOWN condition and miles, leaks etc. needs ripped that hard. how stupid.

You can buy brand new rebuilt edelbrock carbs for $250 or so. if I'm paying over a hundred it best be rebuilt and garunteed to work.

Now some special hard to find carb yea it's worth money good or bad, but a reg. quadrajunk or edelbrock, NO.

Internals, hate to burst your bubble man but they are worth scrap. Me myself not knowing it it over heated or ran out of oil, no way would I end up using them. I would be scared or wrist pins bad or seized up, pistons swelled or whatever, crank scored due to bearing spin or failure.

So that covers everything but the heads, them might be able to use.

Don't get me wrong I'd buy it and try to rebuild it for myself but I'd be scared or it and always be wondering when it's gonna let go, unless I had the cash for new internals, crank pistons, maybe rods.

Pistons are cheap and tons of ppl replace em anyways so they aint worth much.

rods maybe, some ppl just change them too for stronger ones or to be safe.

crank, probably needs machine work, wouldn't be worth it, have to get a replacement.

cam and lifters, NO change them, timing set, NO change it, oil pump NO

That's all of your internals right there, yea some may be ok but without tearing it apart I say only thing to save and use is heads and maybe rods, have to have the crank checked, pistons I'd change along with the rest.

So basically you are getting a bare block, heads, oil pan, intake, carb, dist. and misc. things like pulleys and brackets, WHICH ARE worth some money to the right guy.
Water pump i cheap, change it. If you can get the junk trans and rad, the price$175, is well worth it. I'd go no higher then $200or so for the rad, trans and motor, and I'd take it all, hoses to belts and bolts and brackets, shoot I'd have all the plugins off or yank the underhood harness too. Trans linkage and cooler lines, all of it. I'd even take driveshaft, or shafts, is it 4x4? if so take the t-case and driveshafts.

it don't matter what idiots want for things, or what they think it's worth, they are all out for the all mighty dollar. They know finding th400's aint easy anymore but that much no. I bought a th350 that works, with 9 quarts of unopened fluid, a torque converter, dipstick, kickdown cable and a yoke for $75. The local junkyard wants $250 for one.

You wanna blow money go ahead but no way would I give more then $200 maybe 250 at best for a blown up big block that you aint sure what you can even use on it, and a burnt up trans that's the same way. The case could be junk and so could the motor block.

Guys around here want 3-4 thousand bucks for a big block period running, so I'd imagine it's a little less but probably still more then 1-1500 for a non running one. Would I pay that much? NO. I could build a nasty small block for that price to out pull or out run the 454. Same as HRPC said, a new model ls1 or something would cost that much.

I missed out on an 8.1 with a spun rod bearing for $800, computer and all. Another one of those times I really wish I would have jumped. Moral of the story: a better deal than that one will come along, save your clams up for it when it gets there. In my opinion if you cant give the guy scrap price for it (~$50) he's a crook, and thinks he's got you on the hook.

You can buy running 454s here all day long for under $500.

I didn't have the means to get or put a 70s crew cab with a 454 for FREE or I'd have it.

everything is overpriced here too. You also don't see hardly ANy big blocks for sale. You just have to look around for awhile and not jump on the first one you see.
