VIN, I will get back to you. This will be the first time I have heard of the PROM chip at all, if that might explain why I didn't provide more info. I will look in to opening my ECM and sending pics/info.

It's a Flint K truck. 5.7, 350 with 700 R4 transmission. Not California, or Federal emissions. Altitude is near sea level here on the eastern side of VA. If that's what you meant??

Next chance I have to look for the sticker on the PCM for the part number I will.

Thanks for responding.
if you are going to do that, go ahead and start a new thread and quote @gmbellew and @AuroraGirl (me) so we can see it and then all your info will be in there and prove to be easy to communicate

the VECI underhood on the core support or your air cleaner should say "THIS VEHICLE CONFORMS TO EPA REGULATIONS FOR THE 1987 MODEL YEAR (or High Altitude, or California CARB)" at the bottom
Copy. I know you are over my head with the knowledge. I have to work in a few hours. Get back to you tomorrow hopefully. More rain in the forecast however.

I need a Tac.

you really need something like this - https://obd2allinone.com/aldl.asp

it's not really that difficult to jump in to this OBD1 stuff. I knew about nothing a few years ago. but between being able to look at the GM manuals (particularly the emissions and drivability manual) in the reference library and the data I get from ALDLDroid, I've been able to figure out a LOT.....

note: the data in the ALDL stream is updated 1 time per second ,and the engine operates differently when the ALDL is hooked up, so a tachometer is a good idea to have in addition

Impatient as usual, so I went for it since I really want to get this back together because I have parts spilled all around my property. I still need to paint a little under the hood so I am leaving the paper until that’s completed. I had this paint leftover from the z28 project 30 years ago. This blue looked awesome on that car. The blue stripes look okay for my 20 footer.
There are so many projects left unfinished because folks wanted them to be perfect. I got over that crap years ago. None of my junk is perfect but much of it is good. Many times at shows I hear folks comment about rock chips or swirl marks, rust bubbles or scratches and dents; it don't phase me now. I have my stuff out on the road and am not hesitant to drift, donut or burnout on any of the hot rods. The Squares all get trips through the field and to the hardware store as well. They are all REAL and they do REAL CAR/TRUCK stuff. The perfectionists can keep criticizing my junk all the while their ride usually doesn't get finished.

They also don't drive and enjoy them. What's the point of a vehicle if you don't drive it lolol

Also end result is the vehicle goes to **** because it doesn't get driven. You put all the money and time into it then don't even take the time to enjoy it, usually because it's "too nice"

yeah, the data report out speed is about every 0.8 seconds, so it is pretty slow. the actual ECM is making changes much faster. so it does help, but it isn't a perfect diagnostic tool.

as long as you don't enter diagnostic mode on the cable/scanner (it should come with directions of some sort on that topic) then watching the data via a cable while the engine is running has no impact on what the ECM is doing. or at least that I can ever tell on mine.

I'm with you... The worst thing I ever did to a car was put an expensive paint job on it. I was nervous to drive it, nervous to park it, and nervous to own it in the end. I want to drive what I own and enjoy it. Buffing paint and worrying about dust doesn't bring much joy...

Honestly, that’s where I’m getting to.

I still have thoughts about a 15k paint job, but as much as I think I like the idea of that, I enjoy the mechanics of just working on my truck. I’m reconsidering my plans, and thinking about spending the cash to just fix the rust areas, as my truck has natural patina that I don’t mind and if something happens like a scratch or ding, so be it. It wouldn’t thrill me to have that happen, but with it not perfect, it is obviously much less of a deal.

I appreciate that guys like Frieburger and Bieri are more into “don’t get it right, just get it running”. The people that can afford a rotisserie restoration will say that thinking is an excuse to not have a show paint job because I can’t afford it- and that may be the case- but I don’t give a sh!t what they think. There’s room for all of the ways to do vehicles IMHO. I’m reconsidering just having a clear sprayed over what I have to preserve it and leave it as is. Carry on.

Oh, and what have I done lately? I picked up some tin to fab some baffles for the M/T valve covers and just need to tap the bosses for the 8-32 screws to hold them on. Should have them on this weekend.

Last Friday I washed the truck, it was NASTY from all the rain we've had and me driving it while the other truck has been down. I also put my new stickers on my new windshield, so everything is right with the world again lol

I sold a pristine, low mile '03 Mach1 to build my current truck. I loved driving the car but I didn't drive it often cuz I was always worried about something happening to it. I enjoy my patina truck so much more

I would highly suggest, beg almost, for you not to clear your truck. Mine is cleared over patina and I wish so much they'd never done that. It looked great when I bought it but now it's blowing off in sheets and in many other places it's lifting and making a weird, bubbled/hazy look before it finally pops and comes off. For your truck, I would take it to a good detailer that works on older single stage rigs, let him polish it up real good and then ceramic coat it. If I could, that's what I'd do with my truck
