Hello!

I have a 1981 C20 with the 5.0 305 with a 4BBL carb. I have a new exhaust for it since the one on it rusted away. I got Headers to tips and want to put them on. I would like some pointers for removing the smog system. it seems overly complicated and I am new to all of this.

Where do I start?

Any help is appreciated.

And you don't need anything which has a belt attached to it except for your power steering, water pump, crank, and alternator!

Yes it can be.
You probably have a smog pump, connecting tubes, evap can, egr valve, etc.
Are you going to remove/replace the cat?

Post a picture and we can point out what to remove.

Thank you all for the responses. let me get a few pictures up.

Don't forget the AC unless it doesn't have AC.
It does have AC as far as I can tell

Additional info so you don't have to ask.
Truck sat for a long time, no idea how long unfortunately.
I am aware of my Brake Booster leaking real bad. working on finding a new one.

I am new to this whole thing but this truck has a lot of sentimental value so I want to fix it up and make it real nice again.

Thanks! From poking around I believe I am in the right spot.

I very badly edited some of my photos of what I think I need to remove but I have no idea on the 3rd photo what is going on there. Can't tell if they are going into the head or just the headers

The air injection system, EFE, and the TVS that controls it would have to go for me. The TCC lockup switch would have to stay. I’d keep the PCV and canister because they perform jobs that are worthwhile IMO. The EGR would be up to you, and I suppose the EGR TVS would have to stay anyway to keep lockup from happening till operating temp. I actually can’t speak to the value of having the distributor delay valve. I’m assuming it manipulates the spark curve to what they thought was more economical back then.

man I know 3 of those things ha. so it starts up right away now as is. not sure how but it does.

So the seems to me that the plan is to eliminate a lot of things correct?

Things to Eliminate:
Smog
AC
air injection system(what does that do?)
EFE
TVS
Maybe EGR

Things to keep:
PCV
Canister
EGR TVS

I need to get a manual asap

You're in the USA, which state only you know. Any smog stuff you remove, keep it. You may need it later. Don't toss it.
