14 bolt brake cleanup

Hi everyone. I’m cleaning up a 14 bolt rear to swap into my k5.

Removed perch’s, old lines. Going to replace e brakes, adjusters wheel cylinders and hardware.

The shoes look good to me

I want to clean out the inside of the drum and backing plate. Dont want to go nuts just knock out the rust and maybe paint a little.

Should I use caliper paint or can I get away with just rustolium?

What are the pros/cons of using braided line vs hard line?

Remove everything. Use a wire wheel on the backing plate, paint it with whatever engine enamel your local stores sell (I like Duplicolor low gloss black).
You can save the E-brake lever, the adjuster assemblies and the spreader bar, wire wheel those and leave un-painted. get some hi-temp brake lube and grease the adjusters on the inside. Replace the wheel cylinders and all the hardware. Wire wheel the drums inside and out then paint the outside only. Grease your backing plate on the contact patches with the hi-temp brake lube. I would replace the shoes.

And take pictures before you tear down each side to reference later.

I just did this last year on a 73 C30. I had a lot of trouble finding some of the parts, there are 2 sizes of adjusters, the spring that goes on the adjuster bar (not the one that goes against the shoe but the one that is just on the adjust bar itself) and the pegs that go into the cylinder are super hard to find. Even the drums, orielly sold a set that was just a tiny bit smaller (~3/8") in diameter than the ones that Napa had.

So definitely follow the advice above to not throw anything out until you're done.

I had to go to all 3 parts stores in my area (orielly, Napa and parts authority). Each one had a different part that they could find. The issue may have been because it was a C30 and may be a frakentruck but I'm happy to share the part numbers I used if you need them for anything.

Old shoes can cause all sorts of issues. Toss them out. Remove the hub, clean/buff spindle area replace seal. This is one place where trying to save time or money isnt worth the risk.
