The selection of 17" tires has shrunk greatly in the last 10 years. If you are buying new wheels, I'd go 18" or 20". And if you ever go big brakes, most require 18's.

I guess a square set-up is the best. Would either 8 inch or 9 inch wide be best? I might have to order the fitment tool for wheels. Currently on CPP UCA LCA and Detroit 950# drop springs, flipped and notch on factory light duty leaf springs. It's in the weeds. I've got a set of 265/50-17 BFG on Torq Thrust II's (8" wide). I'd like to keep the ride quality somewhat.

I was just saying if you have wider rear wheels but same tire you’re going to have at least the appearance of the tire change axles and the wider ones up front may not match what you hope to see.
The logic of the rear wheel being wider is there but by having the different backspacing and 1 inch width difference wheels you’ll be limited to side to side rotation and I don’t think you’ll like the life of your rears being toasted so quickly compared to the fronts. And not sure how the front wear will be over time.
The rear wheels toasting faster could be helped by having 2 more rear tires and rims if you decide you like the look of whatever you decide and the fronts can go as long as you have useable tread.

"Square" just means that all 4 corners are the same size.
Different rim widths front vs rear is fine, so long as the tires are different widths as well. If not, I see no point in different rim widths.

You dont need to spend money on the fitment tool unless you really want to. 2 pieces of wood is all it takes. One mounted to lugs, and the other T'd off the top.

19 inch tires tend to be cheaper than 18 inch

personally I would look for a 2007-2008 era Chevy alloy rim set,...something typical and easy to find.
(when the wheels were similar in bolt pattern / offset to what you got...before the change...
and yeah fords / dodges/ gmc,...but I guess you would want to keep the bowties on the center caps.
as for steelies: plain miserable Heavy and easy to bend if you smack a pot hole / curb.

19s are not cheaper than 18s. Not apples to apples anyway. Not to mention that 19s are almost not an option at all for anything that would fit this truck and 100% not available in the style he’s looking for.

well gmc is way cooler than any bowtie.
so I guess one could swap grills/ tailgates/ wheel caps/ horn cover.
