I worked at dealers in the 80s. They used to put sunroofs in anything. It was a huge money maker. If they leaked or needed repair the only fix was to find one that would fit the hole or a bigger one. Parts were non-existent in the 80s.

The other big thing they sold was sim-con tops. Simulated Convertibles.

A previous owner had one put in my 1985 Jeep - it is the reason I need to completely replace the floors on both sides now. My preference would be to just weld in a panel (pretty much a flat section) and do away with it. Unfortunately theres also roof rails up there and I'm betting every one of those fastner holes leaks now too... One of the main reasons I was so happy t o find my Suburban is the complete lack of anything on the roof that would have fastener holes. There is one hole in the side of the roof panel just behind the rear door that I believe had a limo-style TV antenna at one point, I've got tape over it to keep water out but its on the vertical not horizontal. I'd like to weld it closed but don't want to burn up the paint around it....

I don’t understand it. Absolutely no chance of me cutting up my roof for a sunroof, or antenna for that matter. They also raise the temperature inside the cab with the sun beating down on you constantly.

Of the probably half dozen I've owned and the thousands I've seen over the years I can't say I've even seen one with one installed in person.

Cutting that big hole in the roof would make me a nervous wreck.

They must gravitate towards me.

This one is for sale by me. It also has the rare vise grip steering wheel.

I wouldn't want a sunroof in a classic vehicle but I loved the sunroofs I've had in some of my modern vehicles. 1 NBS Tahoe, 1 NBS Yukon and a '14 Fusion. The Tahoe and Yukon both leaked a bit when I first bought them but once I cleared out the drains, never had another leak from the sunroof. Fusion didn't leak, my mom's '12 Charger R/T has a sunroof and it doesn't leak. Both get the drains cleaned out a couple times a year. But the modern ones all have a drip tray/drains/etc in them, so if they're maintained, they shouldn't ever be an issue. At some point I would love to get a Wabasto installed in my '05

My main use for them is venting hot air in the summer and a bit of additional airflow all year long with them just "popped". I never fully retract them, that's too much sun and air buffeting.

Sucks that some dummy hacked up a manual transmission tilt column... those are pretty rare IIRC.

Shoot, you’re right. I didn’t even think about that it’s a manual tilt column.

I would agree they are pretty rare/uncommon to see.

Just curious, do you guys know who used to make them?
Company called LaVan made sunroofs as well as pop open side glass.
Cutting that big hole in the roof would make me a nervous wreck.
I installed a sunroof in my wife's TR7. Yes, cutting the hole almost gave me a heart attack! All ended up well and it did not leak, unless you left it open in the rain.

The box it was packed in had a picture of a TR7 as well as others. TR7 is long gone but I cut out the box picture. Wall art in my garage.

Ah yes... I remember that day. The nice summer day that I drove home in my '84 with the sunroof popped up, then parked under the shade tree before I went in the house to eat. Then I fell asleep for a couple hours. When I woke up, my wife told me about the terrible rain storm that had passed through while I was sleeping.

Yeah, my seat was wet for a while, lol.
