Tires - 245/75/16 or 265/75/16?

Hey everyone,

Now I am looking at Tires. Probably going with either BFG A/Ts or Rugged Terrains. Looking at either 245/75/16 or 265/75/16's.

Anyone have input on either size? My understandig is that the 245's are around 31" and the 265's are around 32" tall.

Any picutres of either?

245/75/16's are equivalent to 31x10 and 265/75/16's are equivalent to a tall 32x11.
Without more info regarding your truck input will be very limited.

Sorry - more info - going on a 1987 3/4 ton. No lift, stock height.

Yep- what bucket says. Also it depends on how much you stock suspension has settled. Mine settled quite a bit.... but here it is with the 235/85's on it:

And this was with the 265/75's on it. Same height- just a bit wider. I like the way the 265's ride. Same load range E, but they soak up potholes and bumps better. Are you going to get new wheels? Or how wide are your current ones? My stock steel wheels were only 6" wide and that was too narrow for the 265's. Ended up buying some black steel wheels in 8" wide. Usually the recommended wheel width is 7"-8" for them.

Thanks for the pictures - do you have any issues with the wheels rubbing while turning?

I am going to be getting new wheels - do you remember what the offset is on the black ones you put on?

Nope- they didn't rub. I did put a lift on it not long after this as I found I had some damage done to the front leaf spring, the shock mount, and the bump stop bracket. (Didn't see a massive hole in the shade on a forest service road).

I bought mine from discounttiredirect.com and they are Unique model 297s. 16x8, 0mm offset, 4.5" of backspace. $99 each. They are made by Cragar. Cragar does have some that look almost the same, but the holes are slightly larger. Cragar calls them the black soft 8. Same price and specs.

77K20 has a good point. The stock steel wheels (16x6.5) are really to narrow for 265/75's, though there are people with the newer 16x6.5 alloys running 285/75's without issue. I personally wouldn't do it.

It won't hurt anything at all. Several times I've run wide tires on skinny rims, never any problems. Tires have a recommended rim width, it's not required. Although a skinny tire on a wide rim can cause troubles.

More than anything it depends on the tire shop that will be mounting them. At least in my area so many are afraid of getting sued they go by whatever book they have. If the load rating, or wheel width, or the speed rating is off they will not install them. I've even asked if I could just pay them cash, not get a receipt, or even sign a waver. They said no way.

The only issue I have ever seen with running a rim that is on the narrow side is it can wear the middle of the tire out quicker- especially if you are not running weight in the back of the truck all the time.

I personally have issues with wide tires and skinny rims. I feel that having the sidewall bulged out too far is asking for debris damage, either on the trail or on the road.

My 84 K20 needs tires, but I am looking for a set of these wheels before I get new tires.

I like the way steel wheels look on the square's but Chevy did not provide us with much choice with the 8 lugs.

Not sure if you knew or not, but the GMT400 3/4 trucks came with steel wheels. They sort of look like a ralley wheel, but they are not. Just another option to consider.

Most of GM's 8 lug steelies are 6.5" wide, which is the same as teh square 8 lug steelies.
