3/4 race cam is the one I still hear from time to time.

For those wondering where it comes from.
compiled by
HARVEY J. CRANE, JR.

Ed Winfield made his first performance camshafts in 1914. These were motorcycle cams with individual lobes pinned to a shaft.

His first automotive camshafts were ground in 1919 when he built his first homemade cam grinder. Ed was 17 years old at that time.

Ed told me his mother gave him the money to purchase a used grinding machine that he converted to a cam grinder by adding a rocker table. This homemade cam grinder was used in his mother's garage to regrind Ford Model T camshafts into racing specifications.

Ed told me he first made only two masters, a SEMI RACE GRIND and a FULL RACE GRIND! He later made a third master that was more duration and lift than the SEMI but less than the FULL. He then used the FULL RACE master as an intake and the new master as an exhaust.
He called this new reground camshaft a THREE QUARTER RACE CAM! Ed said "It was three quarters of the way to a full race cam".

According to Dema Elgin, ED began working for Harry Miller at the age of 14 1/2 in the carburation department. Within a few months he was doing other machine work on the famous Miller racing engines. Harry wanted Ed to stay on with him and offered Ed more money. Ed was being paid .60 cents per hour and was offered .70 cents, but ED wasn't fond of Harry because he was like a dictator.

Ed quit grinding camshafts in October of 1969 after he finished a batch of Drake Offenhauser camshafts. That's 55 years of grinding cams!

So basically, his grinds were a secret so no specs just generic names.

The 301/302 combination was born out of necessity. The first versions was because that was as big as you could bore a 283 block. The later factory version was because the Trans Am racing class( which Camaros and Mustangs and Mustangs primarily ran) had a CID limit of 305 CID. Chevrolet already had goods heads and blocks for 4 inch bore so they took Heads and blocks for a HP 327 or 350 shortened up the stroke to the 3" stroke and they were legal. The factory 302 was not to make more power, they were de stroked to meet class limit. The big valve 350/327 heads and big 327 cam made the small engine turn more rpm than the bigger motors because the cam and heads could support more rpms on a smaller engine.Due to cfm requirements.
Yep, True Story, now not all the 283s could be bored that far. The earlier years could be bored a full 1/8 inch. That's a lot considering boring an engine.

That makes sense kind of lol.

The one that I dont get is "RV" cam. I've driven 2 RV's in my lifetime. One was a big Winnebago/cousin Eddie type with a 454 that topped out at about 60 mph and other was the smaller van/camper combo with a 350 that could run about 80 flat out. Underpowered low compression slugs, but they would get you there....eventually....but not how I want anything I own to operate.

So for the last 25ish years now of reading it on the Internet, I’ve asked people when I see them in an older RV, if they've put an RV cam in there RV??? I get some funny looks but the answer has always been no.

How did the name come about if no one is putting an RV cam in there RV and the stock engines were no different from any other engine of its time?

For the new generation/LS, etc, the “3/4” moniker has been replaced with “stage 2” or “stage” whatever. Every one has a “stage” cam in it. Which makes no sense, because of course, there’s no consensus on what the stages are.

Back in high school, we just said “stock” or “built “.

“Man, that guys got a built 350 in that thing”, which really meant it made about 300hp.

I've had my hands on many older vehicles and wrenched on a bunch of old and odd stuff. I was watching Ed Smith the other evening and he was talking about the 265 and how it was like the stove-bolt sixes with no oil filter. I have never noticed this and hadn't thought about it either. I remember my dad talking about the "Power Pack" 265 and then the "big block" 348 and 409 too. I am still surprised by the 2 year run of 265 and the lack of oil filter though. Just when you think that you've seen & done it all...here comes someone with a little more knowledge and experience. I'm thankful for this site and YT channels where folks share their wisdom and experience.

Because the mild, top of the page cams were often listed as "RV/Towing" for their applications. "RV cam" just means it's got a very mild, but not stock cam.

The one that he used for an example had the stove-bolt style cannister that was actually bolted to the water outlet on the front of the engine. I have never noticed that before but again the 283 replaced the 265 in 1956 as far as what I've read. The 265 had a very short run. The older folks would know and my correct me.
