The little plastic piece on the cluster backing plate that holds the cable from the shift indicator. Has anyone had any luck coming up something for the cable to ride in without replacing the whole cluster plate? I was thinking about some kind of smooth bolt or screw for the cable to move in. It is a 79 if that matters.

Do you have the piece that broke ?
If so, maybe glue it back together?

If not, not sure how you are going to do your idea , but it seems reasonable, and easier, that replacing the cluster plastic.

A smooth bolt with some sort of ridge to keep the cable from moving too far out of a straight path might work.

I do have the piece. What type of glue would you use? I will try it but i have my doubts.

@Raider L is your guy.

Here he used Quick Grip - never heard of it, but maybe he would recommend this for your job, too.

Never seen or used the Quick Grip stuff and I'm sure it's a good product but I'd use 2-part epoxy.
My 2 cents.

I would also use the the 2-part epoxy. I if you can, carve a small piece of wood or plastic to fit behind the break if there is a flat area. That way you are not relying on just the raw edge of the break. The splint will give the glue more surface area.
