Would a bad fuel cap cause it to fail the evap as well?

I would definitely think so. Make sure the vacuum line between the carb and the canister is in tact because they can melt or get brittle over time.

In case you don't know, the seller is legally responsible for getting it through the test.

awesome, thanks. i'll try it. is this the right one? It says "vented" all options are "vented" though I'm a tad confused why I would want vented.

don't worry, i know. he took price of smogging it again off the truck and said if its anything beyond fuel cap to let him know. he owns a local car club so i know where to find him if there is a problem.

Well, it passed. Yay $9 fuel cap from O'Reillys. While we're talking about gas caps, where do y'all put yours when fueling, since on a Suburban there's no bed to put it in... I end up putting it on the ground but I'd rather not do that.

Ha, I put mine on that trim piece between the bumper and the tailgate. It'll just lean right there.

just get it registered as a diesel...
its a declaration of facts piece of paper.
just say you did a motor swap and theyll leave you alone forever.
CA doesnt have the manpower or resources to check under your hood.

Oh man, with my luck they would check. I'd be standing there saying something like "Well, I thought it was a diesel. Must just be the rods trying to escape."

to get a smog cert as a diesel in CA that was previously a gasser you have to take it to a referee they will verify it's a diesel then and only then it will be exempt from future smog inspections. unless you put a newer diesel in then you will have to get a smog cert according to the year of the engine. highdesertranger

I usually set the gas cap on the pump or on top of the rear tire (that's only handy if it's lifted).

Couldn't make a sort of ribbon that lets it hang from the tank after you unscrew it like the new trucks? They even have a little tab on inside of the fuel door to hang the ribbon on

Yeah, all my newer vehicles have had that thing.

Today I got gas with the old burb and placing it on the rear tire worked perfectly.
