So I’m working on a ‘84 and I want to put in a posi lock in the rear differential in the near future. It’s a 12 bolt main with 3.73 gears from a ‘76 high Sierra. Is a posi lock install just a simple swap or does it require additional items to be bought and installed too?

It depends... If you have a factory locking differential then it'll require complete carrier replacement which means partial ring & pinion set up. If you have an open differential then you can install a "lunch box" locker without gear set up.
