This might be a dumb question but I assume there's a point where a ring gear and pinion set is too worn?

I'm swapping in a used set of 3.73 gears into a 14 bolt FF and can't get a good tooth pattern. I'm no where near a gear expert but the pattern I'm getting would indicate fewer pinion shims but I'm getting that with no shims installed. Tooth contact on toe side of drive side and heel side of coast. Backlash is around 0.005". Time to get new gears?

Move the ring gear away from the pinion. Worn gears have more lash. This may yield a better pattern.

In the future, when dealing with used gears it is a good idea to record the current lash.
