Well I replaced the pump anyways but when I dropped the pump the drive shaft was loose and the collar was broken. The bolt on the pump was also finger tight. All I can think of is it wasn't meshed with distributor when I torqued it down

same as a small block.

pull up number 1 to top dead center on compression

pull out number 1 plug stick your finger over the hole have someone tap the engine over till you feel the pressure. then line up the timing mark on the harmonic balancer at zero.

stab the distributer so the rotor points to number one.

you can use a long screw driver to line the pump shaft where it needs to be.

If your just pulling it to prime and then retime just remember were it came out at. You will need a long flat head screw driver to turn the oil pump shaft to get it back in the same position. Really no need to turn the crank.

I would pull up number one and do it the right way so I know its correct

I do all my distributers the way I posted that way I know where number one is at no questions.

you can just stab it in anywhere and find number 1 it will run but I just can't do it that way

it only takes a couple minutes

Thanks, when I removed it the vacuum advance was all the way against the fire wall so I'm going to try and drop the housing in shoo there's plenty of room all around. I'll be timing from scratch as I didn't mark anything.

If it isn't too late, spend two or three bucks and get a steel collar for the oil pump drive.
They won't break like the nylon one did.

NAPA p/n SEP 22443353 $5.99
They went up, I bought mine 14 years ago when I built my 383 stroker.
I'm sorta funny about having dependable oil pressure in my engines, it's six dollars WELL SPENT.
