Everything went super smooth, up until I fired it up. Started and Ran for 3-4 seconds probably 4 separate times. Waiting for the gauge to show me something... I replaced the oil pan And pickup tube with+ 1 quart unit from summit racing. I put seven quarts in and primed the new filter. Didn't prime the oil pump as it's the same unit. Just bolted it back up....

Soo watcha think? Am I not letting it run long enough to cycle oil? The engine runs great, I do not want to pull the distributor to prime that way. So what are my options?

It was a bitch to install, it was very tight and this particular pickup uses a tab that bolts to bottom of the oil pump. It's got hei, do I just pull the mini harness plug with 3 wires (I think) off the side?

Pulled the power to the hei and cranked for about 3 min total In 30 sec intervals. Plugged back in and fired up and still no pressure. Lots of valve train noise this time... is it possible to bolt up the oil pump with the drive shaft I'm the wrong position? I figured it would have bound up not allowing me to bolt it up? Any advice? I'm going to goo buy a priming tool now. It's there enough room to get it into position on the 454? My dizzy is sure close to the fire wall..

I would say something is not in right you should have pressure after all that

drop the pan recheck everything then prime with the primer tool after reassembly

What am I looking for when I put the new oil pump on, how do I know if it is positively engaged. I always figured if it didn't bolt up Then it was In a bind? Is there more to it?

make sure the plastic clip thing is not broke and installed right on the shaft

make sure the pick up tube is still on the pump I would tack weld the pick up tube to the pump

remove the distributer before you install the pump

To add what Kleedus said:

When the pump is out, take off the four bolts and pack the pump with assembly lube or white lithium grease. It creates a vacuum when you turn over the engine and you get instant oil pressure because of the vacuum. The oil gets sucked in a lot faster than if there wasn't anything in the pump. That is a trick from some old school mechanics I learned.

Don't forget to mark the position of the rotor when you pull the distributor and align the pump shaft accordingly so everything will be like it was when you pulled it apart. Makes for easier starting when all is said and done.

In the process of priming the new pump through the distributor housing using the priming tool. I'm using my 18 bolt cordless Dewalt. All I can get is 15 psi no higher is this because of the lack of speed coming from the drill?

If memory serves me right, I only managed around 20 psi using a strong corded 3/8" drill priming the oil pump.
But even that is adequate to fill the oil passages and lube everything.
