Short side story on life lately for the folks who enjoy my posts and content.

My 03 trailblazer if anyone remembers had a good stout built 4L60e in it that I built.

It had an electrical pass thru connector leak like a year or two after the build, so I dropped the pan like hours before a beach trip to fix it (bad idea) and caused it leak enough on the way to the beach it hurt the converter and 4th

That was like June of this year and fast fwd to about 2 months ago, it started slipped 4th eventually. I pulled it, took it to WHO I THOUGHT was a reputable builder friend, he refreshed it for me because I didnt want to this time, charged me 1100, and it broke the front pump IMMEDIATELY upon turning it on.
Took it back out, brought it to him again, 1 week later he "fixes it" after i both supplied a new pump AND machined it.

That trans lasted about 1 month with a bunch of violent shifting, and finally **** the bed about a week or two ago.

I got pissed, and gave up on it for now ..... so I began looking for another daily beater.

Found a bunch of good leads on marketplace, including a 03 singl3 cab silverado s c h l o n g bed 4.3 v6 , a 01 ssei with a cyl 4 misfire, and a Honda civic with a manual trans that wouldnt crank with the key but would clutch dump start.

The 03 silverado had a broken steering wheel, broke passenger door, flaring 3rd gear and leaking rear main on the 4.3 , smelled heavily of g a n j a lol. I had to let it go. The sliding 3rd only get worse from there on a 60e. .... while in charlotte I tried the ssei...... went and looked at it and pretty much loved it immediately. Ive always wanted one.

So I got the 01 Pontiac bonneville SSEI today with the higher output s/c 3800 or whatever. 4T65e-HD trans. Fully loaded interior with all the luxuries. Dual climate control, power seats with presets, power windows, sunroof, HUD (wow), traction control mode, a nice stereo head... yea its not too bad in there. I loved it. But when he pulled up it was misfiring so badly on 4 you could pull the 4 plug wire and it wouldnt change anything lol. The motor was jerking at idle, but I decided to test drive it with hptuners in my lap, and see what it could do.

It built some boost misfiring, has 65psi of oil pressure, the trans is nice and firm in 3rd or on the converter. Owner was a kid. Scared to death of me and my 1911 on my side. Very polite, seemed very honest about it. I didnt get any bad vibes.

He said the head gaskets were replaced, it had the misfire on 4, and it had some bad fuse that might be leeching power related to the turn signals.

Cars got 126 on the clock, and it drives and runs great.

I bought it, and took the gamble. I drove it to oreilly while my buddy followed me, and probably spent 2 hours in the parking lot going in and out of the store buying tools or loaning them as needed so I could change the sparkplug wire, sparkplug, and coil for cylinder 4. As well as fixing a MASSIVE vacuum leak on the blower for the crank case ventilation manifold.

Misfire was solved, and I drove it an hour home down hwy 85 running 75 mph on the converter.

Blower sounds like its got rocks in it (plastic coupling ring that costs 20$), and all the plugs and plug wires are OEM, and some misfire when you give it the beans.

I intend on doing a full tune up and fluid change on the components, and maybe tuning the transmission a little, and enjoying this thing.

So i did a thing today
For the low price of 1500$

That and the necessary belts for the stock blower wheel and the smaller 3" wheel i bought and some misc goodies.

All I need now is some bigger injectors which I can source from wherever. Probably will grab some 6.0LS flex fuel injectors (52lb)

With the intercooler and smaller wheel I bet I can put down at least 300whp

That'll be alot of fun .

Unfortunately im having to do this chit in the direct sunlight , which is taking alot out of me (silverado is hogging the only shaded spot)

But with a little bumper cutting, and little hood latch bracket notching... the exchanger and intercooler pump is mounted.

Yesterday was a busy one.

I decided i'd tackle installing the core and thought it'd be 3-4 hours....

It probably would've been, except the fuel rails on the rear of the engine were hitting the cast EGR manifold.. which required me cutting off part of the flange on the manifold and modifying the rail just a little to fit in the space.

Then came the next challenge which ZZP also didnt disclose. The fuel lines had to be shortened up like, 10" on both return and send, but they are originally those heat-shrinked nylon tubes over the quick connect fittings ... I had a barbed fitting i was able to stick in there after using a heat gun on the tube for the send line, but nothing on the return line. So I had to order some fittings and gotta wait til Tuesday smh

I was able to get everything else connected except cylinder 5's injector plug and the BBV's solenoid plug. I will have to lengthen those in order for them to connect.

I also had to take a hammer to the inside of my hood and smash it in so the hood would close LOL

Ill get pics later today! I had to work in some of that "feels like 107°" heat to do it... sweating and swearing, drenched in sweat.

Yea. Wasn't a very fun time. I didnt have no time for pictures lol

I was wondering about hood clearance. The hammer comment confirms it, lol.

You could also do what some of the import guys (and old VW Bug) did and just put spacers between the hood and the hinges.

Didnt get pictures! I will though.

However I ordered what appeared like sketchy knock-off Chinese Deka 60 injectors off ebay.. and for whatever reason the dimwits sent me genuine deka 80's LOL

Which is great. The 80s can go in my silverado and the 60s i put in my silverado can go in the SSEi.

I estimated on e85 I would need 58lb/hr with a 3" pulley on the blower, so 60lb/hr would he perfect.

What a beautiful little mistake whoever on ebay made, LOL

Welllllll

After getting everything worked out, I had an issue with the car smoking from the rear manifold.. drove me crazy!

I looked and looked under and behind the car , couldn't find anything.

I spoke to @bucket for some advice or input seeing as I thought he had worked on these 3800s

He suggested my valve covers were leaking, which... the rear one was. When I bought the car, the PO told me head gaskets and intake gaskets had been done. Well apparently nobody ever changed the rear valve cover gasket. It was still stock i believe. The grommets were cracked and leaking, and the valve cover was definitely leaking oil past it.
Front valve cover had been replaced with sloppy RTV and over torqued bolts.

This is my first 3800, so i got to cuss at the GM engineers for putting the valve cover partially under the alternator bracket.... and also for running coolant lines THRU the alternator bracket lol

Scumbags!
So i had to replace one of the coolant elbows, the other one had been replaced.

After new valve covers, it still smoked lol. I climbed up under it again with an inspection camera and saw residual oil on the primaries so I wiped it all down best I could, and while I was also there, I shimmed the EGR tower 3/16" away from the fuel line fitting you saw in my last post.

Took it for a test drive. Gave it a hard pull. No knock retard! , gave it another pull right after, still no knock retard!

It was a hot day yesterday, and the intake temp PRE S/C was 100-130°

That was a big success. The car used to pull like 6-8° of spark due to knock from not being intercooled.

Unfortunately I lost 1.5 - 2psi of boost , which i figured I would thru the intercooler.

Its got better torque though, and accelerates much better in 4th on the converter.

Here soon I will install the 3" pulley and slap my 60# injectors in and get that up to 12-14psi

You say you "lost" boost, is that from restriction, or actually just a reduction in pressure because the temperature is so much lower? Are you running a MAF that you can read, because I'd bet most of it is the temp reduction rather than restriction.

Glad it's running good and not pulling timing. I'm sure that things is a hoot to drive!

Poor wording on my part but I definitely believe the loss in pressure is just because the air is cooler, I imagine its still probably around the same airmass being pulled in

I do have a maf, ill have to compare to an old data log i took to see where it lands
