Depends on which gm motor you have and what your gears and tire size is. If its the standard 8.5 to 1 replacement motor and you want to have good low end in a 4x4 , the xe268 is to much cam. That cam would be better with a higher compression motor if you want good low end. At 8 to 1 you will bleed off to much cylinder pressure on the low end which will make your motor soft on the bottom end . What you want to do is pick a cam that works with 8 to 1 to keep the cylinder pressure up at low rpm . I would go with a smaller xe like the 250 or 256 , or the 4x4 xe , like the 4250 or 4254.

I threw together a 350 with cast flat tops and 194 smog heads for my plow truck , 373 gears , 33 inch tires , and a buddy had the xe 4x4 4250 that he gave me and it was shocking how much low end that 350 had. It was really fun to drive.

Rule of thumb , dont over cam , you will be sorry.

happy new year

It's a 2wd lowered street truck,3.07 gears now but changing in a few months to 3.73. Tires are 255/15 in rear

That cam's torque curve actually comes on pretty quick, with 320 ftlb at 1500 and 395 ftlb at 2500, with headers and a dual-plane manifold, so it might be OK. It's not as soft in the bottom as I expected, looking at the curves. You might want to go a touch higher stall in the torque converter, though, like 1800 or 2000.

12-238-2 (XE262) is probably a better choice. Stock stall would work fine.

With 3.73's and that tire size you could get away with a bit more cam. I have used the 268 cams in a few , mild , builds and they really like 9 to 1 so going with that 262 might be the way.

If that's the basic $1500 Goodwrench crate engine, I see in a GM catalog where they list it as 8.5 in one section and 8.0 in another. But it's actually closer to 7.8:1.

Anyway, the last thing you need to do is close the intake valve too much later on the compression stroke, otherwise you will bleed off more cylinder pressure, which kills power. Here are two cams that should work:

Crane P/N 114112, Grind Number 2020
I used this cam in that very engine in a 69 C10 with a 3.08 axle. It actually closes the intake valve sooner than the stock cam. And it makes a lot more low-mid RPM torque. So much that I could drive up tight mountain roads one gear higher. Only downside is it quit pulling at 4500 RPM, if that really is a downside.

Summit P/N SUM-1787 (same as Crane 260-H10, I think)
With its wider LSA, this one would spread the torque over a wider RPM range than the 2020 cam, and certainly let the engine rev a little higher. And its intake valve closes only a few degrees later than the stock cam.

Other cams in the 204-208 intake duration might work, as long as you keep the LSA at 100 or below. Isky makes a cam that is 208/208/108, which I've always wanted to try in an 8.0:1 engine. And there's someone out there who makes the very popular 204/214 cam on a 108 or 110 LSA, Sig Erson, as I recall.

Have to add that I know two guys running the stock cam in that engine. One in a 51 pickup, the other in a 55 sedan. Both of them really like their engines. And with a small 4 bbl, headers, and 34-36 degrees total advance (+ vacuum advance) they are anything but dogs.

I meant to type 110 and not 100. Don't know why I'm not allowed to edit errors on this forum. Anyone???

Well, I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I reset my browser security settings and rebooted and now the Edit button is there.

Just tried it and it does work.

Regardless of which browser or PC I use, I can edit for several minutes after posting, but after that I have to live with my errors, or clutter up the thread with another post. Seems like I wrote an admin about this a while back, but never got an answer.

Editing is not an issue on the other car and truck forums I belong to.
