Use Eastwoods Heat Coat in and on those puppies. You'll be glad you did!

I used it on my headers. 2 coats, 1 can. I shouda used 2 cans but it's holding up well and a LOT cooler under the hood which is great if you don't have a 'snorkel hose' to bring in cooler air.

I have ideas for cold air intake once the 292 goes in.

Lookin at them pux. Thinking "wtf am I lookin at?"
Oh wait. 9 and 37?
Daaaannnmmmm! Thatslkke 4.10? Way to go! :D

When I finally got eyes on the gears I immediately thought the ring gear looked thinner. Looked at pics of the 4.57 ring gear in Crusty. It does look thinner than the 4.57, hmmm, is it a 4.11. Come 'ere brake kleen. Wait, no way the numbers are at the back part of the diff! Then, 9-37, what the heck is that, shouldn't it be 10-41? Where's my phone, let's run these numbers, 4.11! Holy crap! These 4.11 HO52 gear sets are near extinct nowadays.

After doing some investigating, the pinion slop/backlash in the HO52 in the parts truck is maybe 1/64ths of a turn. Whereas, the slop in Crusty's pinion is easily 1/4 turn. Yesterday I popped the cover and discovered this.

There was a lot of water that came out before any gear oil did. My guess is that water was in there before I bought it in '05. It doesn't look too bad, but I won't know until I can get the axle shafts loose and 3rd member removed.

It's open, not the No-Spin, but most importantly, look at the numbers 9 - 37! That's right, 4.1111111111 gear ratio! That plays perfectly in to the future plans for highway cruising rpms.

And I have learned that 14 bolt brakes will swap on to the HO52 axle.

My original plan was to swap in my '68 Dana 60 with 3.54's, then re-gear later. But this 4.11 3rd member is a win!
Most probably do not realize how rare those 4.11's are in that rear axle. There's only 2 ratios 4.56 and 4.11 that I'm aware of. 90% of them are 4.56. We found one one time, and it happen to be in an old ass 60's ambulance that had 4.11's for my dad's 3/4 ton. It was like striking gold. Even though the speed limit was 55 then, my dad drove the freeway 90% of his driving. The 4.11's and 35in tires got him where he wanted to be.

For sure! It's like finding a polished stainless needle in a stack of chrome needles. I have to admit that seeing 9 - 37 that day, really made my day, even with the water and rust on the ring gear and carrier. I think this one is just fine. The rust showing in these photos I took after pulling the axles out some so I could rotate the pinion, mostly came off with some brake-kleen. Even if the bearings are shot I can order a new set of inners & outers from Tork-King for $220. It looks like someone may have been in the carrier at one point, the first photo has two alignment lines chiseled on the carrier. What I really like is that the 14 bolt brakes will swap over to the HO52. Just need the brake parts from a 14 bolt. Also, a Detroit Locker for a 14 bolt will install in the HO52 carrier, but the 14 bolt axle shafts have to be used and need to be turned down a 1/4" from what I've read. I'd prefer finding a locker from another HO52 or HO72, though. I could possibly use the one from Crusty Biscuit, but I think that one is shot, or has weak springs. Something is definitely amiss in the No-Spin in Crusty, that's for sure, but this open diff from the parts truck will work as-is.

Yes sir. Not sure if it will classify as a hot 292, but definitely a very warm 292. Found a '66 292 with 155k on it according to the PO. Compression was high in all the cylinders. Was going to swap it in 2019, but I procrastinated, and that actually paid off, because I wanted to add some power goodies to the engine. I have been collecting parts for it. It will have a lump ported head with 1.94/1.60 valves, the ductile iron dual exhaust, along with the Aussie Speed intake, this 292 should breathe really well. I keep getting hit with other projects, but soon I will tear down the engine to check the cylinder bores. Hoping they are good, and if they check out, hone and re-ring. If not, bore it out. If I have to bore it, I will get some Ross pistons for to up the compression. I am leaning that way anyhow, and may do it, but it's about $700 I don't have right now. Although it may be money well-spent if I wait and do a full overhaul. I'll talk to the machinist to see what his timeline would be to prep the block for new parts. If it will take him months like it did the head, then I will have to weigh my options.

I knew this rear sway bar was under the parts truck. Yesterday while crawling around underneath it, I realized I had to remove it to get the 3rd member out from under truck using my scissor-lift-style transmission jack. Didn't want that 4.11-geared-unicorn falling to the concrete...lol... Anyhow, look at this sway bar setup.

I bet this truck was a blast to drive. They had a floor shifter, 3 speed, 4.11 gears, hopped-up 283. That's probably why it was wrecked...lol... It would have helped to have a front sway bar installed, too, but they didn't. So the rear tires would lift in hard turns. I bet it was a blast on dirt roads, though. Leave it in 2nd gear and rap it up to any rpm you wanted. It would be a lot of fun sliding around turns with this setup.

I do have a front sway bar from Mean Green that I do intend to swap on to Crusty Biscuit. There is a chance this rear sway bar will also get installed. :driver:

Just bought some 14 bolt drum backing plates off fleabay! Let the 14 bolt brake-part-sourcing begin.

I know I looked at least at 100 or more of those before I finally found a 4.11. And I counted the spins 4 or 5 times to confirm before I started wrenching to pull it. I just about had to open a car door and spank it right there in the Pull A Part that day.
