That awesome, but I wouldn't say that qualifies for "off the shelf". Not made in large quantities and certainly not a price point most would be ok with

I designed the stock GMT800 box to handle the L18 engine (1" Hg restriction from ambient air inlet to throttle body at 272 g/s flow).

It overachieves for all the smaller engines.

It was a very aggressive requirement.

K
youre the engineer for the box , or just engineered that application and it was used down the line for simplicity?

Id like to ask about the filter differences, the high capacity filter vs regular. to my understanding its a pleating/material difference, the high capacity can go longer between changes and fill up more?

We briefly discussed if we should remove those buttons or if it made more sense for them to remain on the truck for the life of the vehicle. In the end it was cheaper and didn't hurt anything, so they stayed. If you look at any GMT800 fullsize truck you should see those two buttons on the back of the rad support, just going along for the ride.

THATS WHAT THOSE ARE FOR

IIRC the button is JUST outside of the perimeter of this photo

Yes

If you were to remove the coolant bottle you would find the tab fits on there perfectly.

All of it: from ambient air inlet to the throttle body, for every engine combination.

I shared it at first with another engineer but he was such dead weight it was easier to do it all myself.

The pleating is different which allows for the different dust capacity. The filter expertise came from the supplier, Delphi (formerly AC Spark Plug/ AC Delco, in Flint).

We offered a LD filter with the small engines but you could opt up via RPO K47 to the larger filter.

Big engines came standard with the HD filter.

Both filter elements fit in the same box.

That's why we screwed the lid down. For a vehicle that stays on pavement it's essentially a 100,000 mile filter. We didn't want people messing with it and knocking dirt down in there, especially when it had the "filter minder" installed.

I have 5.3L LS and want to open it up to breath what is the best to use for that I like K&N but I hear S&B are really good too? any suggestions?
Sorry to hijack your thread -

As I look at this pic I am reminded of two things:

1 - Powertrain really screwed the pooch with that throttle body placement. It was good for them and a pain for everybody else.

You can see that crazy upper radiator hose that it forced. If you look at the L18 engine you'll see we actually had them kick the throttle body up at an angle so that we could get to it over the fan and rad support.

2 - This was our first try at underhood beautification. So they assigned a styling guy from the studio to make sure everything was up to snuff.

First thing is the contour of the box: the top is not flat, because that can look concave. It is actually a 9522 mm radius, crowned up, to make sure it doesn't look sunk in.

Second thing is those ribs, on the engine cover and box. When we started "insies" were "in" so we designed the cover and box with little styled grooves. Over the course of the design cycle "insies" became "out" and "outsies" became "in", so we had to redesign the covers to match the latest and greatest styling direction.

To give you an idea on the timing my first day on the GMT800 was Jan 2, 1994, for what was then a 1998 model year program (pushed back to 1999 model year release).

And also, the airbox's used ot have the filter gauge but eventually did not, was that just cost savings?

Yes - it got cost saved out.

I fixed my air box with jb weld plastic weld epoxy , when I collided with a metal fence post at considerably speed that poked out of a hill , it slapped my headlight and required new one, dented the hood and fender. I later found it broke the screw thread parts of the lower box next to the coolant tank(the other 2 were fine)

I used a pick to put some grooves in the plastic and then repaired with epoxy, then sanded the flange the filter sits on back to flat after it cured.

It’s still holding, do you think that’s a sufficient repair?
I can always get a new lower if not

Note:

Your pic: tune up label on air cleaner = HD (engine gets certified)

My pic: tube up label on rad support = LD (vehicle gets certified)

I turned a Silverado box sideways so the opening picked up the stock cold air hole through the radiator support. Used 4" mandrel bent pipe that I cut too short and added an inch back in then didn't grind it down enough lol. It's got a brace to the alternator mount bolt for support in the middle. Then some black paint. I went to the driver side because that's where the ebay harness had the maf wires routed. I still had to extend them a few inches. I used a stock high flow box based on another post where Keith had said they were designed for big blocks and diesels so it's overkill for the small blocks.
