I have 5.3L LS and want to open it up to breath what is the best to use for that I like K&N but I hear S&B are really good too? any suggestions?
Sorry to hijack your thread -
As I look at this pic I am reminded of two things:
1 - Powertrain really screwed the pooch with that throttle body placement. It was good for them and a pain for everybody else.
You can see that crazy upper radiator hose that it forced. If you look at the L18 engine you'll see we actually had them kick the throttle body up at an angle so that we could get to it over the fan and rad support.
2 - This was our first try at underhood beautification. So they assigned a styling guy from the studio to make sure everything was up to snuff.
First thing is the contour of the box: the top is not flat, because that can look concave. It is actually a 9522 mm radius, crowned up, to make sure it doesn't look sunk in.
Second thing is those ribs, on the engine cover and box. When we started "insies" were "in" so we designed the cover and box with little styled grooves. Over the course of the design cycle "insies" became "out" and "outsies" became "in", so we had to redesign the covers to match the latest and greatest styling direction.
To give you an idea on the timing my first day on the GMT800 was Jan 2, 1994, for what was then a 1998 model year program (pushed back to 1999 model year release).
