So I dropped my truck off at a freinds to look at some issues I was having with it starting when it's cold and here is what I found out...

It's a stock carb but the choke has been removed which is whats making it hard to start when its cold and that only 2 of the barrels are working. Do I just buy a new carb? if so, which one? Do I get a manual choke, or an electric choke?

I would love some insight and thanks in advanced guys!!

Stock carb...quadrajet? They have vacuum secondaries so they wont really kick in till it's under a good load. You might get them to open revving it really quick. If otherwise it functions well I would just get a pull cable and make the choke manual. Cheapest way.

You mean the whole choke plate is missing? It's the metal plate on the top of the front bore.

I'm not sure whats missing, he just told me it has no choke assembly. He said the carb is stock but I don't even know what that is. Sorry for being ignorant to this fact, believe me it's frustrating but again this is one thing I know nothing about. Can I replace the choke assembly without replacing the carb? Thanks again guys!!

Dude, if you had some good pics of your carb from a few angles, it would help greatly. :/

They're a bitch to adjust, but it's better than the heat pot type that probably came on yours. My Eddy has electric choke and I'm about to swap it out for manual.

Could you explain why he wouldn't like it?

My brother has an Edelbrock 1405 on his 400SBC, and it starts/runs/drives great. No bog, no hesitation, no stumbling.

IMO Q-jets are easier to rebuild and to get adjusted, but it really comes down to what you are more comfortable with. I have never had any good luck with Edelbrock carbs, so i stay away from them.
