Installed the new U-Joints in the rear drive shaft. Much more gooder lol.

When I worked at Oreilly’s after retirement U-Joints were the most feared parts to replace as there were so many “Wrong answers”. Yesterday I had them order the wrong parts per my bad. Turns out the right ones were in stock! Anyway following today’s horse show I got the new ones installed and plan to install the drive shaft in the morning.

Had a gut feeling about this one and for a change, it was spot on. The big question is always "how rusty is it"? Well, I better go get that lottery ticket. Doesn't get much better than this. Hard to see, but just as hard not to drop a phone in too, lol.

Wow.
Varnish - check
Dirt - check (probably from me going in)
Water and other assorted ethanol schmegma - check
Rust - nope. Wait, a little surface rust inside the vent fill line. That is excellent and one important break to get. The other tank is near full so I have to get it drained first.

This thing shows ohmic increase when towards full, not sure if the values are spec. Suppose I could plug it in temporarily and have a look at the guage.

Pretty sure that's 1979 waving a hand. The O ring is swollen, I'm tempted to fix the ground wire and toss it back in. You know, don't get it right, just get it running. It is getting all new rubber though, not negotiable because it's dumb not to do it now. Oh, and a new pickup screen. Not sure where the original is. There's Sunday afternoon in a nutshell.

The factory quad shocks are setup with the add on shocks on a taller separate bracket, that kind of tucks behind the inner fender well.

If it's got rivets, it's factory.

Mxers first pic is factory quad shock brackets.
Ah, interesting. Neat. Had no clue.
So that would make mine NOT factory then. Cool.
Thanks for the info.

Wife is off today so we had some Shop Time together, with her helping put the driveshaft in the Blazer. She is very handy with tools and always surprises people at work when she pulls out her tool kit (keeps it in the Jeep) and fixes something while others watch and ask her how she knows how to do that kind of stuff.

Based on how fubar the rear u-joints were and how much nicer it drives now, I dropped the front shaft to rebuild it too. The rear u-joint (closest to the transfer case) of the Double Cardan joint has some slop in it. I’m taking this axle to a shop with the right tools to have it rebuilt.

I noticed you put in greasable joints. That's great and all... but I've always wondered why that is a popular choice. Seems most sealed u-joints last 150K miles and maybe more if they aren't abused. Probably the same as greasable IF someone greases them consistently. And if you don't grease them? Not nearly as long.

And you can buy the front shaft brand new on Ammy for less than rebuilding what you have.

I know they're SUPPOSED to be better but this one didn't last nowhere near that long.

Non greasable should be stronger as it is a solid cross, and the seals on the non greasable stuff should be superior to a greasable joint.

Of course, lots of people like to say they want greasable stuff because it will last longer, etc, except for the reality is most people don’t or won’t follow up on their end of the deal, to grease those components at an interval to prolong the life.

I personally use greasable stuff for most things on my stuff, but non greasable is probably best for the vast majority of vehicle owners out there.

Installed rear shocks, left side easy, right side needed grinding on lower bushing tube insert to get it to slide into the lower mount. Sometimes the easiest things aren’t always easy. Prolly do some “easy” interior and wiring tasks next while I focus on some landscaping work. Yea, PO left stock exhaust hangers dangling around. I need to clean those up, would rather use them than the aftermarket hangers being used. Another “easy” task in the future; gonna be too cold soon to be laying on concrete.

Not *my* square, but I drive it the most. AMD's '76 6cyl/3OTT shop truck, I drove it up to Denton, NC this past weekend for C10 Fall Revival. We took backroads to avoid the construction that's been on I85 through Greenville/Spartanburg for the last 15yrs. I had to tighten the steering wheel retainer nut once we got there cuz it had backed off and the wheel was loose but otherwise didn't have to do a thing! 824mi with no issues, she used half a quart of oil and got 17 and change MPG every tank. I was REALLY missing my blue truck cuz she's slowwwww but it was a good trip

While still not finished an traffic generally still sucks regardless, it is much better than it has been in the last couple of years, especially the cherokee county section.
