I was finally able to work on my 78 after telling everyone else “NO”! The timing needs a bit of adjusting & may need to run back through the valves. It runs & sounds great even before the fine tuning. I have brakes but no power steering yet but that is on the way. The wiring was a mess but it now starts with the key & the clutch must be pressed! The horn & reverse lights even work…I can’t believe it. Working on the facelift now with the students.

Hapnin’ Soon!

I was driving away from the local Tractor Supply in Kelso, WA yesterday and their school is just behind the shopping center. Went right instead of left and out in front of their fabrication/automotive sciences building, some kids had an early 80's square out front, idling with a mild but distinct lope to it. Made me feel good seeing and hearing that. I wanted to stop and chat, but in this day and age, random old men chatting up kids about anything isn't a good look so I just left with my best wishes for their futures.
Nah youda been good down there.
Even on the left side of Warshington. Good folks down there!

I hooked up a one way diode on the alt control wires to stop the backfeed.

I can leave the positive hooked up now.

Just curious, what were your symptoms that made you do the diode?

Especially if you're driving a non-descript white van with a ski mask on.
It's not quite non-descript, with the crusher camaro and Freiburger decals on it, but how did you know it was white? Lol, it's a balaclava by the way. I couldn't ski if my life depended on it.

Backfeed into the dash, battery light would come on (truck not running so duh). That was the thing i noticed.

Post diode the light stays off when the truck is off.

Get a "Free Puppies" magnetic sign, that'll reel 'em in.

Just got back from the machine shop, the heads are good to go. Not a quality issue in site per the shop, they’re actually built very well. So I guess with that said, I give my tip of my hat to Brodix.

Now, I’m coming to terms the fact that I actually have to take a perfectly good running truck apart. Kinda gave me pause today, but it’s something I’ll get over very quickly as soon as I start ordering lots of really cool parts. Hope y’all are doing great.

I remember those feelings...I'm long past that now. I've done it so much and gotten so good at it, I'll just about pull a motor down just to change the oil

I'm getting real good at taking perfectly good things apart.

The trick is getting them back to working perfectly again. That's my struggle. :D :(

Dash light on truck not running. If wired as a three wire. Either 1 and 2 terminal are flipped at the alternator or the alternator has a bad or missing diode. Now everyone for a cheap alternator upgrade just switch to a 94 amp 12si. It's plug and play, matter of fact it's the same casing that jegs is using on their 100 amp 1 wire. Delco 321-266 Ask for a 1984 Z28 with a 94 amp alternator should get you a bolt in 94 amp replacement. Heck the Squares may have even got 94 amp 12si some years never looked. On second the camaro application would be serpentine belt. The delco number would be V belt.

I'll try swapping the pinned wires around.

Just check them out, unplug them 1 should have 12v on it constantly. That goes to terminal 2 one should have power only when the key is on it goes to terminal 1.

Took her for for a night ride last night to get the doggies a new bigass bag o food. Nope, was running like it had ben parked for 2 days.
So, then the trip turned in to a few circles around the neighborhood to get some fluids moving.
This morning she fired up and drove great. So I enjoyed running errands in the truck.

Went all in today on cooling system service:

Flushed old cooling juice out

Removed and replaced heater hoses with some new Gates hoses

Removed and replaced upper and lower radiator hoses with new AC Delco units, both were stamped 'Made In USA' (bought some stainless steel lower rad hose springs off ebay and installed one in lower hose)

Removed and replaced AC Delco 195 Made in USA thermostat with NOS AC Delco Made in USA 195 unit

Fel-Pro T-stat housing gasket

Filled up with Zerex 'Original Green' cooling juice

Splendid exercise...
Well 99.9% of the time when I do maintenance service or do some fixin on the Suburban, it all works as planned. However this time it seems as though I used too much brute force removing the heater hoses from the heater core and it is now leaking. I had replaced the leaky OEM core about 20 years ago and it worked fine until I broke it the other day. I ordered a new core that should be here early next week so I can go to fixin on it. So this is a "what I'm gonna do to my Square futurely" post...
