I was finally able to work on my 78 after telling everyone else “NO”! The timing needs a bit of adjusting & may need to run back through the valves. It runs & sounds great even before the fine tuning. I have brakes but no power steering yet but that is on the way. The wiring was a mess but it now starts with the key & the clutch must be pressed! The horn & reverse lights even work…I can’t believe it. Working on the facelift now with the students.

I was driving away from the local Tractor Supply in Kelso, WA yesterday and their school is just behind the shopping center. Went right instead of left and out in front of their fabrication/automotive sciences building, some kids had an early 80's square out front, idling with a mild but distinct lope to it. Made me feel good seeing and hearing that. I wanted to stop and chat, but in this day and age, random old men chatting up kids about anything isn't a good look so I just left with my best wishes for their futures.

Especially if you're driving a non-descript white van with a ski mask on.

I hooked up a one way diode on the alt control wires to stop the backfeed.

I can leave the positive hooked up now.

The alternator has diodes in it. Sounds like you possibly need an alternator.

Check for A/C voltage at the alternator, there shouldn't be any. If there is your new alternator has a bad diode, and they charge fine with a bad diode, the normal symptom is battery draining when parked. Why did you go 1 wire? With 1 wire you lose your voltage sensing wire, your alternator loses the ability to charge in accordance with system demands.

This is the one i have.

It says one wire but it can run that way or with the two wires in a clip as well.

I have it hooked up with the clip to do what you described.

With key off i was getting backfeed through wire 1 of the two.

Got the transfer case back because the old man came down. Tested the bushing and Success! I should have a 4wd indicator on the dash in low and high.
