I'm just going to point out that Diesel emissions have been going on for a while and if you have an electronic injection pump it's an "emissions" diesel.

It actually pre-dates that too, but that's where we started spiraling info the abyss.

Did you put a lock or tab on the dowel of destruction?... Or whatever they're calling it today.

KDP. Killer dowel pin. I think "dowel of destruction" sounds better though.

Wasn't that just on the 12 valve engine?

I ampretty sure the deadly dowel pin applied to 12 and 24v's

There is the other one that's bad In 24v diesels, the Mexican (made in mexico) #53 block that's notorious for busting at thinned coolant passages, but that's 98-03 or something, I assume this is newer. I know nothing about dodges, just the cummins' and new ventures that are in their frames

The 03-04 24v doesn’t need a fix, but the second gen 24v did.

The last 53 blocks rolled off the line in the 2001 model year. I had a June 2000 built '01 that had a 53 block.

Little additional trivia, there were also quite a few 1998 12-valves that were also 53 blocks. We had one years ago at the shop that was cracked just like the 24's.

Interesting. I didn't realize there were so many different variations of 24v 5.9's. Most of my experience with them is in agricultural equipment, along with the 6.7 and the 8.3 big boy.

I think they, like other engine manufacturers, were all making changes in those years trying to comply with the EPA. 03-04 were unique, then they changed quite a bit again in 2004.5.

UPS guy just dropped off some Cummins stuff. It looked as though the inner Gates box had been sitting around for a while. This got me excited. Inside were all Canadian and American made goodies.

Unfortunately, the most important piece in the other box is a Gates water pump…made in china.

Correct. "Killer Dowel Pin" is just on 12v engines. 24v engines have the expensive engine block mounted lift pump. The Bosch VP-24 injection pump is cooled by fuel flow. When the lift pump weakens to less than 5 PSI, it craters the Vp-24. Very expensive to repair. Ask me how I know.

I thought the pump on this truck was called a CP-3. The lift pump on this one was converted to an in tank from the cylinder mounted by a Dodge dealer pretty early on.

Still, you should definitely pay attention to lift pump pressure and fuel filtering. A set of new injectors is about $3k.

His truck is a CP3. The VP-44 ended in the Dodge application in 2002. For the VP-44 trucks, fuel pressure was very important as mentioned above. Not so much on the Common Rail CP3 trucks. They will only see about 9psi at idle and can drop to 5-6 psi under load all day long with no issue.

The filtration is the biggest key to these common rail trucks. They really need to have a 2 micron filter added in the system somewhere to keep the injectors happy. I have mine installed between the factory filter/water separator and the head of the CP3.

I swear Cummins never made two engines the same. If you ever get a look at the spec books the variations will astound you.
