Spare Tire Thingamajig

Cant remember how this little thing is used on the spare tire mount on my 87. Looks like it probably slides through one of the two drop bolts. Anybody got a pic of this in action?

I think it goes together like this. It's designed to lock the spare with a pad lock.

Spin the bracket 180 degrees, so the tab does not interfere with the threaded rod, and I believe you've got it!

I wasn't sure if it would interfere with the tire if you spun it around. I've never used this piece on my trucks.

My guys used to hang the spare tire under the truck on the assembly line and I don't remember that piece either.

My 87 was bone stock when I bought it and I don't have that piece either.

Thanks all. Mine was stock when I got it too. I don't see that piece in any catalog or online anywhere so I'm not even sure it belongs on this truck. Thanks for the pics craig85, I'll start with that ….. rotated!

It was OEM. When I bought my 84 in 86, the spare hanger was held up by a regular nut and washer.
I went to the dealer and got the missing parts, including that lock piece. It was right there on their exploded view drawing.

I also did not get anything like that when I bought my truck. Lol I still have the wheel and tire mounted that came on it. Don’t think I would run it very far today.lol

Todd, all trucks should have the spin on part in your photo. The part some don't have is the one in the red box that lets you lock the tire with a pad lock to prevent theft.
