I would like to replace the center dash speaker with one of those with two stereo channels. In my '75 there are no other cutouts for speaker in the top of the dash (later years they added a speaker cutout on each side).

Classic Car Stereo lists the stock speaker as 4"x10", but when I tried to order one as part of my Crutchfield order they said that size would not fit. Crutchfield is usually reliable, but I think in this case they may have the wrong info.

Anyone happen to know the size of the stock center dash speaker?

Thanks,

Bruce

I wonder if you could trim that to get it 6x9.

it's 4x10 for the center dash speaker. More than likely, crutchfield is stating that it won't fit due to either the coil size or the actual mounting depth of the speaker. You'd need one that has a pretty flat face to it when mounted.

I stuck a couple 3.5's in there. It helped complement the 6x9's in the pillars, but still aren't very high quality ones in there.

Thanks for the input. I will take a closer look at the specs on the speakers from Crutchfield to see if they may be too deep to fit in the stock location.

i already have 6x9's in the doors, but I think I need something up higher in front to get more of the high range to come through. I also considered adding speakers in the cab corners where GM put them, but it seems like putting them back behind the seats would really muffle the sound.

Thanks again.

Udate - I installed the a Retrosound 410UK 4"x10" speaker (purchased from Jegs) and it bolted right in. There was plenty of depth, and it had mounting tabs with holes that matched up with the original mounting holes.

The clarity/crispness is excellent and the sound reflecting off the windshield makes it very easy to hear. However, it seems a little weak in the bass tones, so I need the 6x9's I mounted in the doors to fill in more bass.

How does it wire up? LF? RF? Or a mix between the two?

It has terminals to wire it as LF and RF. The way it appears to work is that there is a single main speaker cone for base and mid-range, and two tweeters (left and right) that are at opposite end mounted over the main speaker.

The stereo separation is limited due to the size, but its a very simple installation and the speaker is not that expensive. My '75 does not have cutouts for left and right dash speakers like they put on the newer trucks, so any other dash top speaker solution would have required some dash cutting.
