I had missed the part about the locked up 454. I think I would pass on it, or try to talk him down closer to $100 for just the motor.

Why pass? It locked up cause the trany got stuck in 2nd and someone kept driving it like that. Its been sitting for a year now. So the trans and motor both needs rebuilt.

I would negotiate to get the trans with it too if he wants $175. That appears to be a Carbed motor so it would be a 85. 1988 would have been a TBI motor. The trans will be a Th400 and you'll probably need it with whatever you intend to put the 454 in.

hey bro, yes you should get the big block radiator. Better safe then sorry. Alot of the times they are 3-4 core and some small blocks are 1-2 core and bigger. Anybody wants to dispute that fact, I know for sure that they had 2 core radiators. 1 core maybe, I don't remember what the 76 was, it was thin but I think 2 core. Dad's 84 same way I'm positive it's 2 core and the one that came in it was 2 core. His 86 had 3 core, and a/c, a/c comes into play I guess to determine the core size. The 85 monte carlo has a 3 core in it and I think my 88 is 3 core as well. I was told you determine this by looking insde and you can see th elouvers or fins inside the tank, count the rows of louvers, meaning 2 rows, is 2 core, 3 rows, 3 core.

Without doubt, get the radiator. I can tell you, there is a big difference in my 454 radiator and my 350 radiator. Not only is the 454 radiator a 3 core istead of 2, its taller also. And some half ton 305 radiators are taller too but only single core. I'd get the radiator for sure if its good. I suggest you hit the guy up for $200 and take the motor, trans, radiator. If you decided you don't want the trans, you could Craigslist it for $50 as a core only needing a rebuild. Make a few bucks and keep the damn Chevy Bell 400 alive instead of going to the scrap yard. Chevy Bellhousing Th400's are getting rare. Just pull the motor and trans together. Better have a good hoist though. I'd say that motor and trans together is probably real close to 900 lbs with converter.

Is the fan shroud different between the types of radiators? Are the hose sizes different?

maybe on the tallness but my gmt400 rad is like 34 inches wide and the suqarebodies I had ran a 31 inch rad, but I saw on rockauto gmt400's had 26 31 and 34's maybe another I forget according to the hoses.

the fan shrouds are definately different.

I would agree for sure, get the motor and trans, get the radiator too. Just tell him it's easier to pull it together then seperate.

As for 1 core v8's glad you cleared it up man I wasn't sure.

I assumed all big blocks were 4 core though.

Yes, they might be differant. If I had to guess, I'd say yes they are. One maybe tall and narrow, one maybe short and wide. Differant body styles usally mean different dimensions. Still might be workable though. I'd get the raidiator anyway. Never know, someday you might get a real truck and have a squarebody.

Ok, After checking the sizes on a 454 radiator from LMC:

Gmt-400 is 17-17 1/4 tall x 34in wide
squarebody is 20 5/8 or 19in tall x 28 1/4 wide.

This for pickups. Dont know is sizes are different on the burbs or not.
