no more tow hooks

friend got stuck so i went to pull him out. got him out but at the cost of ripping one tow hook out of the frame. then i got stuck and he pulled me out at the cost of the other tow hook. still have them both, can i just weld them in? or what should i do or have done?

Most people will tell you that hooks are a bad idea. They usually break, sending flying chunks of metal that try to kill everyone watching. Your hooks must be better quality than most since they ripped through the frame, but shackles are the way to go. Your best bet is to copy a cucv bumper. Photo courtesy of CK5.

Factory recovery hooks are meant for light use, not heavy pulling. Even though they can, I don't think GM intended their trucks to go anywhere that can get them REALLY stuck. I think they are mainly there so you can easily pull your neighbors car out of a ditch on a snowy day.

And there is certainly a difference in tow hooks and recovery hooks. As said, I'd copy a CUCV bumper. Those are intended for recovery.
