Trying to register my 1977 k10 chevy in California but they won’t smog it. Because it doesn’t have the original air filter on it and it is 50 state legal and past smog in Washington for a number of years

Well, source an original somewhere. Put it on, pass inspection. Pull it off again.

Lol. Comparing CA and Washington smog is silly.
Currently Washington doesn’t even require smog.
Responded to another thread of yours to help with the emissions label.
For the air filter find one from a stock truck. They’re everywhere at pick n pull. Also post up a picture of this air filter you have going on.
Oh and find another smog tech, yours is a hardass

Maybe even ask him to order you a sticker if his shop is still “open”.

I wonder why the filter would matter? My 77 k10 is considered heavy duty emissions and doesn't have anything like an EGR,converter or anything like that on it and is not required. In Ga a muffler shop even puts a dual exhaust or whatever I want on it. There are no federal smog laws applicable to it in this way.Kalifornia must be the reason.

Back when Washington did emissions, I was certified to do repairs. The air cleaner has a lot of effect on air flow and usually a pre-heat system is present. When testing emissions, the air cleaner needed to be installed. Sometimes the CO readings would change 1% or more along with changes in HC.

They did do under hood inspections and checked for required equipment. If anything was missing the vehicle failed regardless of the tail pipe readings. Many vehicles were dumped on the used market with missing parts that were costly and hard to find. We made money from the repairs, but it was a PITA dealing with the state.

I am not a tree hugger but before the emissions testing when we had periods of stagnant air circulation the air quality was bad. The EPA actually asked the state to stop testing because vehicles are much cleaner today. Testing became unnecessary.
