tough spot to scab, I think I would do what ever you can to beef it up with boxing it. But at the same time I think I would be seriously looking for a good frame to swap with..

Your a few months too late I just scrapped a 79 K10 short bed that had a good frame and a good SM465 with a 205 transfercase.

You should be able to find another junk truck with a good frame for a couple bills, do the swap and take the rest of the truck with your junk frame to the scrapper and get more then your money back.

get the whole frame

x2 If you really think its that serious. It'll make a great time to do the frame off resoration. Rust proof everything as you put it together.

Yea not gonna restore this truck it will just get messed up the next time I take it out. Although cleaning up the underside of the truck would be nice.

no I still have the SM465/NP205 Transfercase for sale. wasnt gonna let those go to scrap. At the time I thought that was the only thing left on the truck that was any count. I can think of alot of things off of it now that I wish I would have kept.

cant find anyone that wants the Trans and transfer case except HR but he is to far away lol

Really, if you're not going for a restore on the truck, I don't think I'd waste the time and money on a frame swap. But, I also don't think I'd pay $55 for a section of frame. That crack is not in a critical spot at all. I'd weld up the crack, fill in the drilled hole with a patch and I'd lay a peice of flat steel inside the frame channel and weld it in about 4 inches on each side of the crack and be done and still be better than new. That's not critical and I think only there some idgit redrilled a hole to lower a shock and it was to close to the edge of the channel. Its just not critical enough IMO to go spending money and a ton of work for a muddin or off road secondary vehicle. If you wanted a full restore, different story and I'd do the whole frame in that case.

I would disagree with that totally. If the frame has a crack in it obviously it is cracked because there is a stress point in that area. Had the hole not been redrilled more then likely it would have never cracked, but that doesnt change the fact that it has both been redrilled and cracked. The only way to fix it right is to either replace that section or replace the whole frame. For 160 bux I would replace the whole frame, doesnt matter to me if your doing a complete restoration or not. There is a safety concern when dealing with cutting and welding on a frame. your life and anyone elses on the highway is worth way more then the 160 bux that it would take to fix it right.

If the crack is where I think it is accoding to the pic, I'm not thinking there is much stress at that point unless a heavy load is on the truck. I agree it WAS a stress point when some idiot put a shock mount there, but that is now gone so the stress is not there anymore. And the type of stress that would be there now even with a load is a different type of stress from a different angle also. I still think a weld on the crack and a patch will make it better than new. It won't be pretty, but it'll be strong. He could give the patch a try and if it doesn't work, then he hasn't lost much then can go with the frame swap. I for sure would do a complete frame swap rather than splice in a piece of a frame. If it comes to that, I'd do it right or not at all.

Well of the short box trucks at the junk yard none of them had straight frames. Apparently they really don't care what damage they do to them when they pick them up with the fork lift, so I'm just gonna weld some patches on it. I'll do a under construction thread on it.

That sucks. Yeah, that's what I'd do. In the meantime, we all and yourself, can keep an eye out for a shortbed 4x4 frame. As said, Retro seen one for $50 a couple weeks ago, and Pops scrapped one not long ago. Just post up in the Wanted section and give it a bump occasionally to keep it fresh on everyones mind and those who might be in your area. :grd:

NEGATIVE it is still a stress point, the crack is inbetween the spring hangers so everytime the suspention flexes it will put upwards pressure on the frame causing the crack to open up more and more, just patching that is not gonna hold. FIX IT RIGHT find a frame
