Yesterday I was driving to get some lunch. Waiting at a light and I feel the truck surge and the idle went up. The choke works flawlessly, carburetor does too, and the truck wasn't stumbling or anything, just the idle wouldn't settle down. After work I was waiting to pull out on the street and had a flashback to a similar situation many years ago with my Jeep Cherokee. I had Pop look at it back then and it was a vacuum leak. Last night drove home, and got to looking, found a couple culprits and replaced some hoses.

One of the leaks was because of this thing splitting, I am calling it, "The Doohickey"... The goo on it is from me wrapping tape around it a few months ago to keep the split shut.

The Doohickey plugged onto this thing on the air cleaner housing, I didn't see anything but straight-thru passages on the doohickey, so this is how I fixed it.

Starting the truck after doing this fix, the engine idled more normal, so I readjusted the carburetor and now it seems to run better, and the idle is back to normal.

Do you guys see anything wrong with the vacuum lines being plugged in directly to the tan thing on the air cleaner housing? Or should I try to find another doohickey or use some glue to fix the split doohickey?

Like my technical descriptions of these items? I do, because I don't know what they're called...lol...

I haven't seen any on HELP cards or Dorman. My Fiero has one that's dry rotting and I expect it to go any time but I've looked around and can't seem to find any either.

If I ever do I'll post it here.

Damn Doohickeys!

I ran all 3 of my ported vacuum switches that way and have no issues. All of mine dry rotted.

Man I feel left out. I don't have any doohickeys or even an air cleaner that accepts doohickeys.

I'll keep rocking it like I have it then. The doohickey got tossed in the tote with all the various vacuum hoses.
