255 vs 285 metric 33” tires on factory wheel

I was pretty much set on trying out the new Cooper Stronghold AT on the burb, but now I’m kicking around getting a 255/85-16 for the factory 16x6.5” steelies instead. Unfortunately, the Falken AT4W is the only 3 peak rated tire in that size.

Two problems:

1-No RWL
2-The Falken isn’t the greatest in the snow.

Either way, I want to get the chinese mud tires that came on the Burb off.

Have you personally run the AT4W?

Pretty sure that's what we put on a couple of the work trucks. We were very happy with their midwest snow performance. The truck that I drive got a set of the Wildpeak R/T's and I've been extremely happy with those too, in the snow. They are just slightly more aggressive of a tread design than the A/T's.

This is certainly not the end all be all, and I’m still considering the Falken, as it’s the only option in a 255. Hoping someone will come along with some skinny 33” photos.

I won't watch that video, all those TFL shows seem to be a bunch of garbage, imho. And Jeep testing is not a similar comparison to use on a heavy truck. And those new KO3's suck, even in wet grass, lol.

I ran 255's on the front of one of my old Burbs. Just low-tread old BFG's. I've got some pictures somewhere.

Not a huge fan of their videos either, but the spread seemed far enough to be more than testing error.

I haven’t tried the KO3 yet, mostly due to all of the reports surrounding balancing issues. I have nothing to back this up, but I feel like the amount of weight a tire takes to balance is inversely related to the tire manufacturer’s QC.

Maybe on a Jeep it is a different world. Ain't know way in he!! I'd put a set of KO3's on a truck, but I sure would run a set of Wildpeak AT's. And I've generally always been a big fan of BFG products.

Well I’d say those results are not accurate in any apples to apples test.

I’m maybe not understanding the question. You want to see pics of both sizes on a square? Or connundrum about the brand/performance?
If it’s wet/snow performance, and those rice grinder mudders are in good shape and run out good, just get them siped full width as deep as possible and go eat up wet and snowy roads.
If theyre anywhere near approaching 50% wear though, I agree, get new tires for best snow traction.

They don’t ride great and they’re somewhat loud. I’d prefer to get a decent set of ATs and use these as rollers for my 75 ford that currently has flat front tires.

I agree with @bucket I'd run the Falkens in a heartbeat. I had the AT3W on my LB7 and it did fantastic in the snow, even our nasty, slushy, wet snow. I also put a set of them on our '07 NNBS LML ECSB 4x4 at work, they've done fantastic in mud, snow, wet grass, everything. They're also quiet on the highway and have worn fantastic, I think we have ~35-40k on them, they're still wearing perfect and have more than half tread

Has anyone had similar 255s and 285s on stock width wheels? Probably a long shot…

Looking for input on differences between the two sizes with handling.

Calling around and no one will really mount a 285 on a 6.5” wheel anymore. This may be the impetus to finally get a tire machine.

Yet another wrinkle…the Falken is a C load tire in that size. The only 255/85-16 that’s not an E load at America’s Tire.
