tire width vs wheel size

I am looking for information on tire width vs. wheel size. I have a 1978 C10 (BIG 10) with stock wheels. I through on some tires at local shop just to get me down the road as previous tures were dry rotted. I am looking at lowering the truck slightly and I saw a guy running staggard on 15x7 wheels with 255/60s (front) and he said he was using a 15x8.5 wheel with 275/60 (rear)...I liked the staggard look, but want to know how wide i could go on my stock wheels? It depends on which stock wheels you have. They could be as narrow as 5" or as wide as 8".

Some tire shops have a big plastic caliper that can measure wheel width without even removing them from the truck... At least you will know what you got

Pics and someone on here should be able to tell you how wide your wheels are.

7” & 8” rims will handle the 275/60. My brother and I both ran that type of setup. The pic is of my brothers 71 Cheyenne with 275/60 on all four corners.

275/60 is the best size for a 2wd.

Here’s a pic of a 295 on an 8” rim… 255 or 275 work great on 8” wheels.

The next pic is 255 on 8”

I’m sure 255 will look OK on a 7” as well, but anything wider should be on An 8” or wider rim.

The next pic is 255 on 8”
