1977 K10 9j9 sport deluxe stepside with factory tach and roll bar.

My name is Tony and I bought an 1977 k10 stepside a few years back for a really good price. Over the last couple of years it has been my weekend go to Home Depot/transfer station truck. When I first bought it I did a cursory look at the build numbers and knew it was somewhat rare due to the 9J9 sport deluxe equipment on the spid. Today I did a deep dive on the SPID sheet with the assistance of AI and it told me it was a true one of one collector truck due to the factory u16 tach, the currently existing factory roll bar, the intact auxilary lights rocker, and the black onyx on 71w xrr1 red vinyl interior combined with a decent not rusty stepside bed. It currently is running on a 78 400 sbc, SM 465 trans, new headers and stainless exhaust with 44 flowmasters. It has rust in all the square body places on the cab, the fenders also have holes in the arches and it has vinatge 70's western turbines on fresh 35 mudders.
I absolutely love this truck and until today intended on patching the rust on the cab and doing something with it including maybe an LS swab eventually. I have other car projects and this was sussposed just a cool errand truck that I would work on after the other projects.
My quandary is this: I truly love driving this truck and intend on keeping it, but if it is a "super rare one of one truck" as AI says it is then I should sell it to a collector. I am not an expert on these trucks and I figured I would go on this forum to get opinions.

Welcome to the forum Tony. You are the collector that knows what it is. Unless you have someone banging down the door to buy it, for lots of money, keep it. You will regret selling it the day it is gone. My 2 cents.

Without the matching numbers engine, the collect value is less.

Welcome,In reality, for everyone with a chevy square. These trucks are not rare, some are optioned out different that doesn't make them rare.They produced millions of Chevy 1/2 ton squares, so not that hard to find another if you can live without a tach. Rare cars are like 1955 Mercedes Gull Wings ~400 made total production tach/no tach etc. 1957 Eldorado Brougham 800 total production. IMHO opinion a vehicle they made literally millions of, an option package doesn't make it extremely collectable. Someone will live without a tach to save 1000 buying a different one.

Welcome from Central NC. That truck looks great & I'm certain that with the 400SBC, 4speed & dual exhaust it's a fun driver & the appearance makes it a head turner. As for it being a "one of one" then I'm in agreement with @Ricko1966 that any provenance was lost when the drivetrain or other components were modified or changed. My advice is to check the oil, gas up and drive that truck.

Unfortunately, AI has lied to you. There's no possibility of knowing if it's a one of one truck. GM did not keep those records of option combinations. More research will be needed for other things, like the roll bar and light switch. I'm nearly certain those were not part of the sport package, so if they were installed at the factory, it would show on your SPID. They could be dealer installed, or simply just installed by a previous owner.

With all that said, it is a cool and uncommon truck. But it is certainly not any type of collector truck. The original engine is gone, which is a big thing. The only exception is sometimes a truck will still have collector value IF the engine swap is done VERY well AND the truck is super clean, low miles and wears it's original paint. Just keep the truck if you like it and LS swap it if that's what you want to do. And don't let anyone make you feel guilty about it.

Keep the truck, fix the rust and drive it. If you want to LS swap it do it. It's your truck.
Don't trust AI it hallucinates a lot when it has not much data on something.
