After months of fits and starts trying to fit my new to me used fuel tank skid plate (40 gallon tank) by myself, on a rocky, gravel parking spot at my desert hovel, I asked a former co-worker for some assistance. My friend is the mechanic at my former employer so I went back into the 'employees only' area where I used work to his quarters earlier this afternoon. It only took 30 minutes or so with the two of us to make it happen. Feel much better now, and the Suburban is a little more secure in the gasoline storage department...

Cranked it and let it warm up while I planned to dust the pollen off and move my wife's car. I dusted the truck and as soon as I got in my wife's car the thundering idle stopped suddenly like I turned the ignition off, but I didn't. I ran to the cab and the check engine light was on. Immediately I wanted to start digging in, but I had kids to shuffle around, so I shelved the truck for the time being.
I was going to pick my son up from school with the truck but I drove the good ole SeeAreVee, and shuffled around kids with that ride.
As soon as my daughter was at swim practice, and wife and son left for a very late baseball game, I started looking into it. No codes when ports A and B were jumped, so I cranked it up. Crazy weird quick ignition, but it idle and no check engine light, so I let it warm up and looked under the air filter to make sure all components visible were in place and they were. The truck didn't cut out, so I took it for a ride and it drove great but literally 1 minute from the house on the trip the check engine light came on, but still drove fine.
I pulled in the driveway, cut it off and jumped ports A and B: Uggh, Code 42... I took the paper clip jumper out and cranked it up again. It fired up and no check engine light. I turned it off and am resting on it.

Currently in research mode.
Hoping I can just replace the ignition coil and lube the new one up really well, but we will see if the coil is bad or not first. My first thoughts were that since my MAP sensor connector plug is zipp tied in as the clip broke off, that could be it, but the code 42 has me second guessing that. I will probably get a new MAP sensor connector pig tail along with a new coil, if and when...
Anybody have an experienced suggestion on where to start?

I would really like to dive in to a "closer to direct" area of the electronic spark system to save time. I would love to go through every procedure in the repair manual, but, if I could save several hours/days/weeks/months, that would be ideal.

Today, Align body panels and hood to my sack of walnuts. Yesterday, worked under the hood. This happened when the hammer head decided to let loose, could have been worse, ouch. Try to do at least one thing every day.

So looking to grab a new ICM for under the distributor cap to begin fighting off code 42.
Should I hold out and order AC Delco?
Or Delphi?
Or Accel?
I think I want to go with AC Delco but was hoping one or two of use guys could tell me experience with Delphi, or Accel? Other brands you all have used...

I'm typically a fan of Accel products... but I had one one of their small cap HEI modules once and it only made it about a year.

...Or maybe it was Jeg's brand. I dunno, it was 20 years ago and the label was yellow, lol. I guess I'm only 75% sure it was Accel brand.

Jumped ports A and B turned ignition on, just for fun, 3 code 12's and then code 42. Was hoping it would only give back code 12 miraculously.

I then cleared code 42 via disconnecting the negative battery cable. Reconnected, jumped the ports, code 12 only, no codes. Took it for a quick run around the neighborhood listening to it and showing it I care. The truck ran normal and no check engine light.

I will take it for now.

I am waiting on an AC Delco ICM to arrive, supposedly today. I don't know if I am going to start there though. Looking over wiring, plugs, and grounds things seem to be ok. Although I really don't want it to come back, I am expecting to see more and need to trace down a toasted wire or replace parts. From the shop new rotor and cap were installed recently that had the truck running great. Then code 42, but cleared for now.

9 years of ownership and many readings of a 82 FSM and no mention was ever made of this grease fitting on the NP205 shift lever . I just noticed it today while working with the cotter pin.

Probably because it's DAM NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to get the hose on ...

Oh, and added a cotter pin to a transfer case shift rod - noticed it was MIA last night.

Quote my own post - this '80 manual SHOWS a grease fitting, but nothing like the way mine is set up. No mention is made of it, though ...

Consistent !!

I just went out and looked at mine, since its all apart. It doesn't have a grease fitting, its a 77 built in late 76.
