So I wasn't really sure where to put this, but it's been on my mind. I try to follow the community guidelines, but this is a GM full size related issue, with my 14 bolt.
The rear end in my s10.

Some of you may or may not have seen/been watching my s10 1 ton axle swap.
Im running a 87-91.5 kingpin 60 from a f350 in the front, and 99-06 14 bolt ff in the rear.
It's a little more beefier than the tried and true classic 14 bolt, bigger axle tubes, disc brakes, but same carrier, same ring gear, same shafts.

The axle has a posi unit in the back. Sometimes it likes to spin both tires, sometimes it only spins 1 tire.
Yes, the 4.3 spins the 39.5's. LOL

Any suggestions as to why it occasionally works?

Should I look into clutch packs for the unit?

Im not a diff expert, I know a little bit.

Maybe someone can give me some advice? I'm aiming to have a TRUE 4x4. Not 3x4, or in some peoples cases, 2x4.

Front diff I just did a locker install yesterday on. Just need to address the rear end when I get the time.

Thanks in advance guys.

is there a rhyme or reason to the working vs not? Like when cold or in turns or loaded vs unloaded?

Idk, truck has been running off and on during the upgrades I've been doing., last time it spun both was in a straight line.

If its a clutch pack posi, id say you just periodically have it cool enough or the fluid with the clutch material in the right spot for it to engage. And if it engages or not immadiately. Vs if its at speed its not gonna engage. Maybe

If I have to, I'll just pull the carrier out and trash it, find an open one and drop a lunchbox locker in. Or just weld the damn thing solid.

G80 Gov Lock is NOT a posi, take off the I and call it what it is, a POS, and then you got it right. Gov Lock only works up to about 25mph, so if you're spinning the tires over that speed, then it'll let loose. They're great for gently pulling a boat up a boat ramp but past that, they're a POS. You may have even broke yours. If you broke some teeth on the gov ring, then if you don't catch it just right where the mechanism catches in the spot where you have teeth, then it'll never catch. So let off and try it again. Kinda like a flywheel missing teeth and the starter can't engage. Find you an open diff and then install a detroit locker in it, weld the cover back on, add gear oil and go.

Simple enough.
Im not a fan of the gov bomb on anything.
Ive lost several rear ends of various sizes due to many reasons, carrier broke in half once, pinion teeth busted off, c clip popped out and cause it to cave....

But the gov bomb has ran it in my pooper several times with several different engine/axle combinations

Can I not gut the gov bomb and turn it into a open diff then install a lunchbox locker?

No sir. It's a total different carrier all together. Gotta get an open diff and then from there you can install any kind of LOCKER you want. Notice I said LOCKER, not a Posi. You can go detroit locker by Eaton, you can go Grizzly locker, or Lock Right by Richomd, or even a Spartan Locker. Those are installed into an open carrier. If you want a posi sysstem, then you buy the posi carrier.

BT the way, that's not true for all diffs. It's true for the 14b FF cuz the carrier is a split carrier. You open it up, install the locker in place of spider gears and put it back together and re install and you're set. A guy with some skills can even buy a used 14b FF open diff, and if he carefully counted and marked his threads to where he put it back together EXACTLY the way it came apart could install a locker without having to reset the ring and pinion knowing he's putting it back exactly where it was when it came apart. However, one that is well worrn, I'd try to reset up the ring an pinion lash anyway.

I noticed it works like a 2.5 ton or 5 ton axle

Threaded caps on both ends to adjust lash, and 2 piece carrier.
You just put the Detroit or whatever inside the carrier :)

Think I'll just find a Detroit and open carrier.
That gov lock garbage can go in my scrap heap.

I have some skillz and a dial indicator... Setting it up from scratch ain't an issue

You're right. They are very similar.

I also say, shop price. Most of those lockers are about equal and work almost identical. So if price is a factor to you, then I'd consider that. I know the Lock Right by Ricmond is good, I've never hear anything bad about Spartan except in 10 bolts. I've all good about Grizzly too. I know at one time I seen Lock Right on Ebay and it was considerably cheap than getting the Eaton Detroit Locker. Detroit Locker is the name of the industry so you maybe paying some for the name, when others are just as good for less. Jus Sayin'.

Yes, that's what I want but I don't want to deal with torque steer on tight trails and why I'm going LOCKER in the rear and Air Locker in the Front. So it'll be a 3x4 until I hit the front lock up swith, then it's a true 4x4.
