When set up correctly a q-jet is one of the best you can have. It has a bad name cause it can be complicated to some, and they give up. But don't let anyone fool you theres a reason gm ran em so long. My uncle can tweak em like nobodys business and they purr. Got one on the 85.

Mine's a Holley and it's performed well.

I have no doubt that the things I've heard about q-jets are due to not getting them dialed in right :)

That's a fact. They can be complicated, and most people are scared when they hear metering rods instead of jets. But, its true, they are a bitch to get set right and dialed in, but once done, weld the damn hood closed. And if you decide to take it off, put it up on a shelf for 6 months, then got back to it, you can. You don't dare do that with a Holley. Holleys are great for racers cuz sky is the limit for quick tuning, but I don't like that one backfire in the carb, now you're done, they leak like hell if you let them sit, and they don't hold a tune for very long in most cases. I'd still run a Holley, but I'd be prepared to work on it too.

My truck sits for most of the winter and I've not had issues with leaking thus far. I've also not had any issues with it keeping it's tune :shrug: with that said I think the motor probably has 10k total miles on it so maybe it's still too new to experience those issues....

Holley is my favorite, I've had fantastic luck with them. Quadrajet Is my second choice, but I'm also not very good with them yet.

carter thermoquad, edelbrock, or Rochester is my favorite carbs and they are easy to work on to me including the 4bbl Rochester.

NOW hurry up and get the truck done before it turns cold weather.

beats a holley motorcraft carb any day and those autolite carbs suck too.

Junk is Junk, no matter the name brand. Carter makes a great carb, but ThermoQuad isn't one of them. I'm fairly certain Holley made most of the Autolite carbs too. Not positive. Thermojunk only came on OEM Dodge 360's in the 80's if I recall. I don't know of anyone else who used them as an OEM. WTH are you doing working on Dodges???

Hey hotrod....What were those suggestions on floor shifters for my 700r4?

Would it serve me well to get one that has a long arm, so I dont have to reach down to shift?

I like the Quicksilver best, but the Megashifter is good too. Reason I like those 2, is the fact they both can run either 3 speed or 4 speed auto, they both have their own provisions for back up lights and P N safety micro switches, they are also both Reverse Valve Body compatible. I had the Quicksilver in my 64 GMC 3/4 and it wasn't a bad reach. I have long arms though. As far as the truck shiftes, they just have a taller base, not a longer stick. Being its calbe shifter, you build a base and make it as high as you want. You could being build a console and incorporate the shifter if you wanted. I've seen it done and it looked pretty trick. Looked alot like an H2 Hummer shifter set up in a console of an old truck. I love ratchet shifters, and had never had a misshift using one.

Since smog is not required and you have some cash I would just go with an Edelbrock 1406 or a Carter AFB (same ****). Its simple bolt on performance that has plenty of room for tuning, you should really just be able to bolt it on and forget about it for a while. As far as the mileage, I have been driving mine in city and on highway for a while and the MPG is pretty kick ass so far.

Quadrajet is a master piece of a carburetor, they are 750 CFM apposed to 600 like the 1406. Primarily around town you run on the 2 small primary butterfly valves so you get awesome mileage. You always have the massive secondaries as a backup when you feel like wasting gasoline.

There is aftermarket variants of the Q-jet you could use too. If you find a stock one to rebuild you have to drill holes in the base plate and knock out some plugs to get to the idle mixture screws, once you are there it takes a special tool to turn the screws. The shafts in q-jets wear the guides so alot of them get bushings installed to stop the vacuum leak, on top of that you have to put epoxy on the bottoms of the float bowls to keep them from leaking. I have rebuilt mine twice and it worked pretty damn good, the only reason I have the AFB on is I was trying to pin point an engine problem and just throwing money at it, otherwise I would still be running the Q-jet.

If I ever get a crate motor in my truck I am going back with an Edelbrock spreadbore manifold and a q-jet.

That is the nice thing about a Qjet, it is 750, actually I think 780 cfm but yet runs on a small motor just fine and you have the extra air if your motor can take use of it. You're not kidding about opening the secondaries though. I can watch the gas guage move when I nail it on the 454 to get on the freeway, just so I can feel the torque for a change of pace. Q jets do also work well on the dual plane edelbrock intakes. Don't have to have a spreadbore intake.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I like the way that quicksilver shifter looks I'll buy it.

Well I went to work this morning but it started raining from that tropical storm lee about 10am, and just now tapered down. Rained steady all day, which is great for our area and quite frankly I enjoyed it. I was in the garage working on the 65.

pulled the doors, windshield, steering column and linkage, steering box, pulled the gas tank out cause the cab to frame bolts were under it, and my luck, the tank was completely full. got it and the seat out, pull the fuel lines out, pulled the mounting bolts, pulled the e-brake cable out, some wiring harness, etc. All I lack is picking the cab up off the frame, which might happen tomorrow. pulled some things out of the cab also, cargo light, mirror and visors, glovebox and cover, door sill plates, weatherstripping, etc. Still have some to go.

When I pulled the window out, everything looked good, no real rust through. Hopefully I dont get a surprise when I have the cab sandblasted. Because there are other spots they filled with bondo when they painted it last time around.

Anyways tomorrow I have to run to longview about 3.5 hours north and get a complete 63 cab, dont know what te shape is but all I need is the BBW panel. Also going to try and buy a new pass inner fender. When I get back if its not raining I'll try to get the cab off my frame and start dissassembling the chassis. Right now I'm tired as balls though.
