Much to my wife’s disgust, my 81 GMC is in dry dock for some much needed maintenance/upgrades. Besides the boring things like fixing the inside door handle, squealing worn out belts and hoses, and burned out instrument lamps, I have decided to “store” some of the extra parts I have accumulated permanently under the hood. Things like a brand new set of Hooker headers, aluminum performer intake, roller rockers, MSD ignition, 8 quart Milodon oil pan, etc.

Btw, 1-7/8 inch Hooker headers for a 64-77 Olds A body fit a 455 powered squarebody PERFECTLY. Not one dent or modification needed. I figured with as much room as there is under the hood of these trucks, i figured it would work. I was anticipating some minor hassles, but im pleasantly surprised they fit as well as they did.

In keeping with the Olds theme, it like to combine the squarebody outside air induction with Oldsmobiles version. I have an air cleaner and hose setup from a 85ish truck, using the factory grill opening on the passenger side. I noticed today there is an identical opening on the drivers side. My brainstorm idea is to use another stock air cleaner, carefully cut the snorkel out and weld it to my existing air cleaner and use another grill opening adapter.

So, my question: what engine used the passenger side grill opening? Does anyone in readerland have a junk air cleaner housing (but good snorkel) grille opening adapter and fresh air hose?

This is the factory 68-69 Olds OAI setup. This is the look I’m going for.

This is the factory air cleaner. I got it from a mid 80s truck.

I've not seen any use the driver's side, pretty sure they all used the pass side. But you could probably just rob extras of the pass side to make your own, I doubt it would be that hard other than welding the other snorkel to the lower housing (just cuz it's kinda thin metal)

The V8 version used one side; 6 cylinder used the other.

My recollection is that a difference in starter location drove a difference in primary battery location, which drove the different air inlet side.

Here's the set up I made and ran many years ago when I had the flat hood on the Chevelle. The driver side tube is intact; the passenger side tube is cobbled.

Years ago I traded Andy (bucket) for two snorkels. I made a dual snorkel for my 76 and will at some point do so for the 79.

The 76 I just run the one tube at the moment.

The 79 I cut the core support (the driver's side hole is smaller than the passenger side) to make both sides match, so I can have a true dual snorkel piped to the core support.

So, my question: what engine used the passenger side grill opening?
'79 c20 big block does. I noticed that other hole too and have similar designs for mine. Inspiration from your efforts sir, cool.

Repairs made here to the deflector on the passenger side opening.

I was told on the 81’s the snorkel was on one side for the v8’s and on the other side for the v6’s. GM put the knockout on both side but only used one. I just used the parts from another v8 and weld it on and knocked out the other plug. The plastic part that twists into the rad support works perfect.

I did the same as last post. I had a 6cyl went to 8cyl just did the knock out and got the extra plastic connector to go in core support for the unused opening from the opposite side

My truck has the opening on both sides, it has a plastic filler panel in the drivers side. I doubt GM would have spent the money to stamp a hole, then design a plug to fill it up if it had no purpose.

I did check, the adapter from the passenger side seems to fit the drivers side. So it appears they are interchangeable.

Yep! That’s the setup. This is what’s under the hood of my Olds. I found the air cleaner in a swap meet years ago, the guy selling it had no clue what it was, I wasn’t sure if it was the real deal. I pieced the rest of it together with reproduction replacement parts.

I’m hoping I can do something similar with the truck.

That’s what I’m hoping to accomplish.
