Should match exactly. You need to order year specific

Most likely you need the one with the spring-loaded tab, there are 2 styles the other is held in with a screw. forget which year it changed think it was in 78 it could have either one but not sure.

Edit my bad says you have one with the tab might not be to spec and locking in fully or the column is worn or broken at the lock slot.

I agree, it's likely not locking into place properly or the column has some damage.

I just went thru this fiasco myself. I see you have a 77 as well good sir. Not sure where you acquired your lock cylinder, but I ordered mine from classic industries. They sent the one from 78 and later that has the screw recess. Our trucks need the earlier model unit with the retaining clip. I picked one up at oReilly. Works wonderfully. Did you have as much grief getting your cylinder to come out tho? Mine was locked in the on position and did NOT want to let go.

yep mike was stuck in the on position so i used some pliers and forced it to off thst might be why the tab doesn’t lock in place

Sounds like the tab isn’t seating all the way, maybe the cylinder or housing has a bit of wear. I’d double-check alignment and make sure the retainer clicks in fully before trusting it.
