That is cool !!!

Not really - at least when you are 16 years old, in high school and everyone else is driving Camaro's and Chevelle's.

My first vehicle was an 78 Chevy Luv. Then later on dad gave me a 64 Ford F-100 with a 292 V-8 3 speed on the tree. Never liked that truck.

My first car was a Mercury Comet...it burned more oil than gas, couldn't do a burnout to save my life. I use to refer to it as my "two stroke car" ...lol. sold that pos for the same amount i paid for it 2 years later ($450). My first truck was a 74 Chevy custom deluxe with a 250, three on the tree 1/2ton stpside 2wd. That truck began the square body addiction...I have since had 4 Silverados since.

1980 Grand Prix. 301 Pontiac V8, Black with the black landau top and camel color interior. Had it for about a year, then sold it and got a 1979 K10 Cheynne long box. Still have a soft spot for those '78-'80 GP's though.

First car: '74 Chevelle (base Malibu).

My dad ordered this car for my mom to drive.

454, TH400, 3.42 posi, 8" Corvette rally wheels; swivel buckets, rally cluster with tach.

Still have it; I have raced this car for 37 years. Best ET is 9.85 at 136 mph (naturally aspirated). Took me to two NMCA World Championships (runner up both times); 15 top ten finishes in 15 years.

My first car was a 1967 Mustang that I paid $50.00 for in 1977. It had a 302 and a 3 speed stick. Never could get the starter to work so I would park on hills or had friends with me but with a V8, stick shift, dual exhaust into burnt out Hush Thrush and a cool wing on the trunk I had me a real hot rod! :) My first truck was a 1980 C10, 250 and three on the tree.

Those old Y block motors were gutless wonders but you could not kill one and they were easy to work on. Talk about heavy bitches too. Good old American Cast Iron metal. Piss poor fuel mileage too.

The bastard years of the ElCamino/Chevelle/Malibu. Seems not many like that body style. Personally I like the Olds Cutlass in those years better myself too. Glad to see someone have a nice one to keep around for the Nostalgic American Vehicle history purposes.

Just spent a little time reading that Hot Rod article and looking at the pics. :manos: So at 13:1 it's obviously an all motor no adders. Pretty impressive to get in the low 10's / High 9's with a car that heavy. Nicely done and keeping the stock as possible look. I'd sure worry about that stock shifter though if it were me. I can see keeping the straight shift pattern instead of reverse pattern, but I think I'd at least have to have a ratchet shifter for just in case. That car is worthy of it's own thread in the "Other Vehicles" category if you so choose. Though I don't know how many Street racers we have here. Prolly not to many. But I sure like the sleeper look it has. Not much about it says FAST car. I'd drive that one on the street but... but.... but.... obviously not running on pump gas and could get very pricey to drive on the street for very long.

That is a ratcheting shifter; a factory ratchet. Pushing forward at an angle only allows the next gear. Release the shifter and it pops back to center to repeat the process. It has a factory reverse lock out.

I didn't know it until someone at the track pointed it out. I had already been racing it 10 years or so before I found out.

I really like it; it has several advantages:

a) Stock looking
b) retains the neutral start switch (required by NHRA) and backup lamps
c) I like pushing forward on the shifter, with my back braced against the seat. A lot of guys in fast cars with the reverse pattern shifter complain that the g forces during launch cause them to accidentally pull the shifter back into the next gear prematurely.
d) I added the PRNDL indication from a '73, so I was able to remove the claptrap backfeed rod (which drove the PRNDL in the cluster and locked the shifter with the column) for additional header clearance. No moving parts.

Thank you.... (...I think...)

;)

Datsun 280zx, not this specific one but like it, was in a brownish color, ugly as sin, don't remember the year though I want to say 86. hah my parents gave it to a guy who painted our house and I ended up with an s10 blazer afterwards...then it has been multiple things since then.
