Took it in for the dreaded biennial California smog test. Prep is just filling it with premium gas and installing the catalytic converter I keep on the shelf. I've mentioned before that the aftermarket cats don't last very long, so I have one with flanges welded to it that bolts on in a few minutes. After the test, it comes off and the old "daily" cat goes back on.

HC & CO readings are always low. On the low-speed test, HC readings were 13% of what's allowed, and CO was just .007%. The high-speed test is about the same, with HC dropping to 12%. What got me this time was the fuel-evap leak down test. The system is pressurized through the gas cap and it's supposed to hold pressure for a set period of time. It failed by .01%. The Tech is a good guy who knows me, so he ran the test again and it passed by a gnat's ass. Only way I know of finding the issue is with a smoke machine, so that's something I'll have to deal with before I go back in two years.

Boring clip of going nowhere.

Gave it a wash it really needed. Pollen is terrible here lately. It's been parked for a few days so seeing that I had about 20 minutes to kill before going to car pool the kids from swim practice, I decided I would drive it around the long loop in the neighborhood. It cranked up slow. When ignited it was chugging kind of slow for about 30 seconds and then it kind of caught up with itself and proceeded to idle high. I checked the TV cable, it was attached. Once it was warmed up I put it in gear and it settled down of course. At this point I was expecting a rough ride, but it drove great. I pulled it back in the driveway and was happy it performed as it should. I never took it above 35 for this short trip so not a very thorough test. I will be driving it tomorrow for sure. We'll see what happens. If I'm felling froggy enough I need to change the oil.

@JamesSam it’s a start! I hear you on the pollen, it’s going nuts here too.

Got some projects in the mail from Summit. Vacuum gauge, and a set of Bilsteins for the front. The KYB gas-a-just feel good until hit a big bump or dip, then they give up and the front end oscillates all over the place. Which feels dangerous on the freeway at 65.

Then got to working, making the ball joint spreader 5000 that @Ricko1966 suggested. I just eyeballed quickly the bolt spread when I had a chance to run into town, so I may need to run back and get a bolt that’s longer or shorter.

Let’s see what I can get done this week.

So I go outside to warm up the truck to test drive/run errands excitedly and found that my drivers side sliding glass is shattered. So bummed. It looks like a number of things could have happened: bird, some kind of ball?? It is in a million little pieces. When I opened the cab door some pieces crumbled out in to the seat.

Where should I start? Calling a window replacement company or plan to order from remanufacture and replace myself?

I know nothing about glass, but it looks to me like the origin is around where the latch is for the glass.

The bit#h is it's tempered,so unless you find a replacement piece from the manufacturer a glass company cannot cut you a piece. Push comes to shove I'd cut a piece of lexan.

I am also no expert in glass, but damage does seem to have a focal point directly below the latch.

So it will have to be a junk yard search or total back glass replacement then?

Called insurance. Nationwide uses Safelite as it's 3rd party. They are coming to me on Tuesdy 5/13. Supposedly this is covered in my deductible. They do have year, make, and model obviously so we will see what Safelite has to say.

I agree about the focal point looking near the latch. Is your latch super difficult to latch? I would imagine Safelite is going to do a full replacement rear slider, it's pretty hard to find pieces for these. Shoot a pic of your gasket/glass near the corner. I'm curious if yours uses the OE seal or not. It kinda looks like it does

I will snap a pic when I get home. I had some general questions about the glass they said they needed a few days to get for my appointment. I knew this would get interesting... speaking to the Safelite rep(not a technician) she told me it would be a full 4 panel slider window. So it will be an entire back glass replacement. I then asked if it will be tinted or clear and she says: "I don't think we can get tinted glass for this vehicle" I says "ok". Then she goes:"if we can even get the replacement for your vehicle" I left it at that knowing I have an appointment on the books. I am expecting a call-back from Safelite in the time between now and the appointment date.

Installed my transmission temperature gauge today. The Autometer literature recommended a “short” sending unit if installing it in a pressure test port so as to not bottom it out. Install went with no problem and I took it for a 40 minute ride. Temps climbed to a bit under 210 then fluctuated a few degrees based on speed, hills etc.

It's a high temp because its in the pressure test port. That is the absolute worst place to put a temp sensor and borderline useless. You need the sensor in the pan or you aren't really getting any good info at all. The pressure test port is a dead head and is really only going to be giving you case temp, if that.
