2nd generation Taurus,Nissan trucks,Chrysler town and country,and actually a bunch of others,cars you have to remove the entire dash. Just set them on fire and call your insurance company.
I kind of hate to say it, but the easiest heater core replace I ever did was in a late 80's Ford. 6 screws behind the glovebox, take the 2 hoses off and the thing dang near fell out on the floor. Took longer to drive to the parts store to buy the replacement than it did to do the entire remove/replace.
Of course I had a similar vintage Ford card where cutting in from the firewall side was considered a safer bet than trying to strip the entire inside of the car out. I'll probably just be running a bypass on my British project if I ever get it roadworthy, it doesn't look fun and sitting next to the transmission will probably be plenty warm anyway.
