After finally finding a GMC grill for my 1980 it was todays project to get it fixed and installed on the truck.
Two broken horizontal ribs were salvaged from another grille and the top grill frame at the centre had a crack that needed to be repaired.
The repairs seem strong and I painted those areas to mask the work.
The grill I have is grey and silver which I understand means it was originally from a van. Still looks much better than the Chevy grill I was using. Maybe I will paint it, but for now just happy to get a GMC grille on there.

Yes. Previous owner painted the truck. I purchased it a year and a half ago. I have been thinking of changing the cream to dark grey, but the color is growing on me. I do always get complements on it and the cost for a repaint means it will probably stay like that.

If you bought them at Advance go back and say to a counter clerk, direct fit? Go out there and prove it.

Do you think the counter guy wrote the application guide? Maybe a call to the manufacturer corporate or an email to the manufacturer,but this is completely out of the poor counter guys hands.

In that aspect you are correct. But I used to be one of those counter guys for a lot of years and when the so-called experts said it would fit, it usually did. In retrospect, the term go out and prove it was a little harsh and used in a somewhat facetious manner. Now if the part was boxed wrong then that's another story for another day. No ill will towards to the counter guys of this world, just don't lie on your resume.

Oh I'm good sir, no worries. After the short time I have been on this forum, I have come to realize your smarts in regard to things that pop up here, you're pretty versed in the automotive world of all things this forum represents. I recall my counter man days and remember all too well what end users experience if they struggle with parts or got the wrong item. The joy I used to get when they got their part and fixed their issue cuz I didn't screw up meant a lot and always made for good return business and when they would ask for me, then it made that feeing even more gratifying.

Spent some time on various Poppy’s Patina products (sold by Vice Grip Garage) and I’m just not happy with any of it. So @legopnuematic and I had a little discussion on another thread and I’m gonna see if I can take this from a 50/50 truck to a 30/30 truck (maybe 20/20 truck but I doubt it).

Got some a couple cool different shape sanding blocks, some 1000/1500 grit, and some cleaner/compound. Let’s see if I can bring ‘er around a little.

The only gripe I have about counter guys these days is that the parts stores seem to hire anybody BUT car guys. When I was in college I tried so hard to get on at any of the parts houses in town and none would hire me because I didn't have "sales/computer experience". But I could run circles around any of the guys when it came to finding parts, figuring out what might fit or diagnosing an issue.

And it's just gotten worse in the last 15yrs. 99% of the time I walk in with their part number in my hand because the button pusher at the counter wouldn't know the difference between a lug nut and a torque converter and wants to ask me if the air freshener I just picked up is going on a 2wd or 4wd. I even had a guy refuse to sell me/pull my parts because I was buying for 2 different trucks and let it slip I'd put the '06 engine in the '85 truck.../rant

McDonalds pays more for counter help than Oreillys so you aren't going to get the cream of the crop. Actually you are going to get people that can't do basic math( figure out how much more they'd make elsewhere) or people so desperate for a job they will work for peanuts. I've worked for Oreillys twice. I made more money 1990 than I could make there now. Actually the pay wasn't that far off it is the fact that 1990 money doesn't go as far in 2023.

I was on a trip and had to buy rear shocks on a truck with a factory two inch lift, and went to two places where each person I talked to handed me off to another person because it was too hard. (whimper) So I did a temporary repair on the road, got home, and my local Napa was the same situation. Nobody wants to think. But eventually I got handed to a guy that measured the old shock I'd brought in and took one off the shelf that worked fine.
I worked a parts counter too, and was known by the customers as the guy that would drill down and solve their problems. These guys (gals) today are getting paid no matter what they are doing in the store, but can't be bothered to think. If they can't look it up... it doesn't exist.

I totally agree, "the wages they pay, keep the smart ones away". I'd still be doing parts but the pay is shyt and they want you to work on customers cars like putting batteries in, wipers, bulbs, usually no big deal till it's -20 outside or raining unless something goes wrong. But when dealers just charge $69 or more just to look / diagnose a vehicle, doesn't make sense making $12.00 hr to do the same. Oreilly's is the worst for pay IMO after working for them for several years. I may get back into it when I retire but I won't be fiddling around with customers cars. The only way a parts guy can possibly make an affordable living / career out of it is if you get into management.
