If it's still as original...

All engine and trans combos got the NP205 for the '80 model year.

Also depends on if someone has swapped it out previously.

This is correct. Every 1980 had NP205 as standard equipment. A different T-case COULD have been special ordered in 1980, but it's highly unlikely. If you post a pic, we could easily identify whether it is or not.

An easy way to tell is the shifter. If you have a Hi-loc and Lo-Loc, it's a 203. If you have just 4L, N, 2H, 4H in that order from top to bottom on your shift knob, then you have the original 205 in it still.

Well, they did stop making the NP203 in 1979 but I am thinking there may be a chance of old stock going into trucks? I know that happened to some degree with the Dana 44 and 12 bolt axles as well. If that was the case though and it is all original then if it has lock hubs on front it's probably a NP205 but if it has smooth caps on the front axle then it could be a leftover stock np203, but the shifter and shape of the cases are easy enough with photos.

Go around the back side...look for the three bolts in the circle in this pic. If you see the three bolts its a 205. If not, odds are you have a 203.

It's widely known that the np205 was the only thing used in 1980, there is no evidence that anything else was used. If you know for a fact that other tcases were offered I'd love to see examples.

Nope, that's why I said for him to post pictures so people could see. 205 was standard for every 1980 model year square, so if he had something else from the factory it would have needed to show up on his SPID sheet. Also, lots of changes can be made by a PO in the intervening 40+ years

This is the statement I am questioning, what other tcase are you saying could have been ordered?

I don't know, but saying nothing could have been would require me to know everything... which I don't. I know that the 205 was the standard for every square. I don't know if anything else could have been ordered as an option. Do you know for sure that nothing could have been?

I don’t have documentation to post pics of but it’s widely recognized that there was no other tcase available in 1980 than the np205.
