Signal Generator to replace VSS ( Frequency) 87 Chev Scottsdale

Hi:

I have an 1987 Chev Scottsdale 1/2 ton with a 305L Engine. The Speedometer is Cable driven from the Transmission, and works fine, There is an output from the Speedometer, through a "VSS Buffer" to the ECM fpr speed. This VSS Buffer has failed. Since the VSS Buffer was discontinued in 2009, I am looking to hook up a signal Generator that will provide my ECM with an "appropriate" signal directly from the Speedometer Cable. It appears that a Dakota Signal Generator might work for this. Has anyone out there done this? Does anyone know the frequency requirement to the ECM?

As common as these trucks are, I would think it should be easy to find a good used one.

No clue if the aftermarket part would “speak” the same language as the OEM.
