Been thinking of going to a single serpentine belt system with spring loaded tensioner. Talking with the mfg (Marsh) they do not offer such a system for a MKIV big block without also changing to a reverse rotation water pump. If you don’t change pumps you have to settle for a two-belt system (in my case) with no tensioner, as pictured.

Are there any “gotchas” with swapping to a reverse rotation pump? It seems from reading here that they will bolt up fine and don’t affect the coolant flow path but wasn’t sure if any other interfaces were affected. BTW there is no pump-driven radiator fan involved.

It's just cast internally a bit different to support the reverse rotation it still flows the same way thru the block and has the same general external dimensions.

Unless you're trying to get away from V belts and go to a belt with less possible slippage the setup pictured with 5 or 6 rib serpentine style belts is a better deal for the price as you just need the belts and pullies if you already have everything else.

Just to note those adjust like traditional setups were the ps pump and alt swing to tension.

I used a Kwik Performance adapter kit to put a small block serpentine set up on the 454 in my Blazer, it works great.

I had the serp brackets powder coated glossy similar to their original bare finish color. Everything is tight together , not all stretched out unnecessarily wide.

Here’s a pic with the brackets installed.

Yep. What I have in mind is a single belt system with tensioner. Just wanting to see if changing to a reverse rotation water pump has any unforeseen issues.

As stated, the only real difference will be internally the mounting bosses, exterior dimensions, etc. should all be basically the same as the standard version.

Nearly every engine with a serp belt has a reverse rotation pump. This is ideal to give both the crank and water pump pulley maximum belt contact info. The only difference is the impeller in the pump. GM puked these out by the 1000s daily, you won't have a single issue.

Later big blocks came with a serpentine drive (2 different style actually) and had a reverse rotation pump. It's essentially the same on the outside. But it's easily available at parts stores, if you should need a replacement later on.

For all the small block guys, the reverse rotation pump is easy to identify on the outside. It doesn't have a mounting boss for the power steering pump bracket that was used for a v-belt.

I remember Ford Aerostars that had reverse thread fan clutches. Those are the only ones I remember that didn't run the serpentine belt like every other manufacturer.

Looking at the standard and reverse rotation water pumps for the 454 for some reason the reverse rotation pumps do not have the bolt hole for the power steering pump bracket. Apparently a different bracket is used. Don’t know if said bracket is compatible with the MKIV engine.

Probably due to bracketry used for a serpentine setup as the PS pump would be set farther forward to line up with alternator if a single belt is used. Only 2 setups I've found use a single belt and those don't include air.

The other is just a black powder coated version of this same setup for more money.

Looks like I forgot about the boss on the big block pumps, lol. That boss is not needed with a single serpentine setup.

I did something similar to my c30. I love it. All the misalignments and squeaks disappeared

Few things that come along with the serpentine belt reverse rotation pump. Also the clutch fan has to be changed. You can replace the pulley on your power steering pump & alternator or upgrade to newer model I recommend the AD244 over CS130D. Same wiring to upgrade but better performance

I used stock brackets from earlier 90’s It’s the ugly steel brackets. The later models are aluminum and to me look a little better. I had some minor fitment issues on bolt diameters being different as I put it on a 1968 396 Also the crank pulley was broken so I’d guess all models of Chevy big blocks do that. Over all it’s the best thing I’ve done to the truck

This is what I’m about to order, only in black. I’ll reuse my existing alternator (new Summit 140 amp) and power steering pump, just replacing the pulleys and alternator fan with those supplied with the kit. I’ll get a new reverse rotation water pump and heater hose connectors from Oreilly.

I’m not running a mechanical fan so no new parts required there.

Have you considered sourcing a complete serpentine set up from a GMT400 or GMT800 instead of spending all that cash on a March setup? It would make all the parts readily available at parts houses and/or junkyards...

Yes there are lots of those setups in the yards around here....
