Update: Timing and idle appear to be on point. Purchased a temp gun from Harbor Freight. At idle after about 15 mins, thermostat housing was reaching about 202 degrees. Location around temp sender on driver’s side head was about 220. Stock instrument gauge was showing 230-250.
I took truck to local AC shop to have AC compressor updated to serpentine pulley compressor. While there they checked engine temp and said it was about 20 degrees less than what gauge was showing. They suggested relocating temp sender to intake, closer to thermostat housing. After checking gauge and temp sender on my own, I’m thinking temp sender is causing gauge to read about 20 degrees hotter. I purchased new ACDelco temp sender from Summit. According to the reviews, this one has a recurring issue of reading about 20 degrees higher than actual engine temp.
With all that said, would it be a good idea to install a new temp sender on intake for more accurate readings to gauge? Again, this is not original motor setup for stock gauge. Heads are from a 69-79 vehicle. Same for block.
Other than gauge reading hotter than it should, truck seems to be driving great and engine sounds good. Taking it easy for the first 500 mile breakin.
