Do the shoes look oily or dirty when you pull the drum off? Got a leaking axle seal??? Usually smoking brakes are leaking wheel cylinder or axle seal.

Look at the brake shoes where they're supposed to be pulled tight to the pin at the top center. That rear brake shoe is NOT tight against the round pin where it's supposed to be. This means the brakes shoes are spread open. How does that E brake spreader fit? It should be somwhat loose and held in place with the spring tension.

The more I look at that pic, it's looking like the E brake lever is being pulled. Are you sure you don't have a kink in an E Brake cable on that side keeping it from being able to slide inside the E brake cable housing?

I am also going to check the emergency brake cable to see if it's damaged

Yes, it could weak hardware too. The hardware kit shouldn't be that expensive and that one spring is certainly damaged where you see the gap between the coils.
